Chapter 4
On his way home, Ben was thinking. He did not blame Emily for turning on him like that. His friends picked on her and put her down on a daily basis. Over the last couple of days, he realized that Emily, who he has known practically his whole life...or at least since Kindergarten, never really hung around friends, she stayed to herself. She also had low self-esteem and did not handle compliments well. However, while in the bakery, she was the bell of the ball. Every customer was eager to spend just a few minutes in her presence. She was happy and even caring. Yet, at school she was secluded and a loner. This would take more observations. He finished his coffee and cream puff just before he got home and hid the containers in the trash outside so his mom would not accuse him of spoiling his dinner.
After dinner, he decided to walk to the square. He figured maybe he would see Emily or hear his angel, or both which would really make his night. As he approached the bakery, he lifted his ear and heard the beautiful sound of his angel singing. He sat down at one of the tables listening to his angel sing to him.
"Spend all your time waiting
For that second chance
For a break that would make it okay
There's always one reason
To feel not good enough
And it's hard at the end of the day
I need some distraction
Oh beautiful release
Memory seeps from my veins
Let me be empty
And weightless and maybe
I'll find some peace tonight"
Emily got out of the shower and began getting dressed in sweats and brushed her hair. She continued singing while she finished up in the bathroom.
"In the arms of an angel
Fly away from here
From this dark cold hotel room
And the endlessness that you fear
You are pulled from the wreckage
Of your silent reverie
You're in the arms of the angel
May you find some comfort there"
The angel stopped singing. Ben sat there for a few more minutes hoping she would sing again. He stood up to leave and the doorknob on the bakery turned and the door began to open. Emily was surprised to see Ben standing there.
"Are you stalking me?" Emily asked as she stepped outside with her notebook looking at him trying to figure out why he was hanging around the bakery and her so much.
"No," Ben said with a smile. "I was just listening to my angel."
"Is she still singing to you?" Emily asked.
"No, she stopped a few minutes ago." Ben said with half a frown. "I wish I could figure out where it was coming from. I think one of the apartments around here. Are you sure you have never heard her?"
"Never." Emily said as she settled down to work on her writing assignment. "I am going to get some coffee, would you like some?"
"Sure."
A few minutes later, Emily came out with two cups of coffee and two danishes.
"Keep this up and I will gain ten pounds within a week." Ben said as he took his cup of coffee and danish.
