Chapter 8
Sunday afternoon, after church and lunch, Emily took a cup of coffee and settled at the table on the sidewalk in front of the bakery. She took her English notebook and began writing her paper for English class. She didn't know if or when Ben would be by. Because she started the paper earlier, she already had over half of the rough draft completed.
She had left her hair curly and falling down around her face, just like Ben complimented the night before. Fall was in the air, and the few trees in the city were starting to turn bright orange and yellow. The sun was shining and it took everything within her to work on her paper instead of putting her head back and relaxing. But, she could see some clouds coming from the west and rain was predicted this afternoon.
Her paper was coming along, she felt good about what she had already written. She was doing a comparative of women in literature. She chose Little Women and found the similarities of the five main female characters (the four sisters Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy and their mother Marmie) to the women of that time. Then compared and contrasted to the women of today.
She was almost finished when someone sat down in the chair next to her. She looked over and there sat Ben with a big grin on his face. "Let me guess, you are done?" Ben said looking over at her. His smile was intoxication.
"Well, almost." Emily said with a half smile. "I just need to do my closing paragraph. Then type and print the paper." While she talked she flipped through her papers.
"My goodness, How many pages did you write?" Ben asked in shock looking at all the papers she was shuffling.
"About ten handwritten, but by the time I type it, it will be about six pages." Emily replied. "Why?"
"I thought it was only suppose to be four pages typed?"
"Well, It is suppose to be four to seven pages typed."
"Like I said, four pages." He said with a wink.
"I like to write until the story is complete. What are you doing your paper on?" Emily asked.
"I am comparing Darth Vader to Long John Silver from Treasure Island."
"I just put a pot of coffee on when I came out here, I need a refill, would you like a cup?" Emily asked as she was getting up a cold wind started blowing and the clouds started to deliver rain sprinkles.
"I think we better go inside. Can we sit at a table in the bakery?"
"Yeah." Emily gathered her notebook and coffee cup and holding opening the bakery door for Ben.
Ben settled down at one of the tables and zipped his notebook into his backpack. Emily poured two cups of coffee and went to the refrigerator and pulled out a Napoleon and grabbed two forks. She sat down next to him at the table and looked around for his notebook.
"Are you going to work on your paper?" She asked as she took a sip of coffee.
"No. I am actually almost done too. And I would rather just spend time with you." He said with a grin.
Emily wondered if he was too good to be true! Was he pulling something over on her? She didn't think so...and she hoped she was right. His blue eyes were so clear like a pool of water. There was no way someone with those eyes could be lying. And his smile, was incredible. How can anyone have perfect teeth like his? They were so straight and white, he could be a model for toothpaste. He was gorgeous all over. Emily could not find a single thing wrong with him.
"So, last night you asked all the questions...it is my turn today." Ben said as he reached over and started playing with one of the red ringlets in her hair. "What do you want to be when you...grow up?"
