Chapter 2 —
A senior is walking past Mackenzie with his eyes glued on her. "Why are you staring at me? Yes, I'm hot, but that doesn't mean you can stare at me when you please," Mackenzie walks away with a smirk.
Mackenzie Malik is about five feet and two inches tall, she's not the tallest girl in the school, but she enjoys being short because she looks good in heels. Obviously, she wears them every day. She manages to violate dress code without the teachers caring, and walks through the hallways like a queen. How did she get herself so high up in the popularity pedestal? Pity. Pure pity. Well, in the beginning.
You see, when Mac was about 12 years old, entering her first year of middle school, her mother left. Yep, just abandoned her, her little brother, and her father. In the movies you mostly hear about the father abandoning them, or the mother dying, but in her story, her mother didn't die. She just abandoned them.
Mac became bitter. So bitter that even her own brother, Mateo, didn't want to talk to her. Just the occasional conversation. Every day at school, she was isolated. People in the hallways would whisper. But, worst of all, people pitied her. She hated that the most. Until one day, she decided to take advantage of it. She became the most popular girl in school. Not only was her dad buying her everything she wanted just because he felt bad for her, but she got everything she wanted from the teachers. All she had to do was use the "my mother abandoned me" card, and she got everything she pleased.
She didn't change, though. In fact, she might've become even more bitter. What's worse than coffee without it's sugar? Let's say she was rotten. Don't get me wrong, she wasn't that bad of a person. Well, inside that is. She was just hurt, and expressed it in the wrong ways.
Poor little Mateo, his only example, only person to look up to, was as rotten as a year old tomato. He didn't have anyone. That was , until he met Noah. Noah became his example in life. The one he wanted to look up to. His big brother. Noah took him to sports games, ice skating, mini golfing. You name it, they did it. Mateo loved Noah, and Noah loved him. I guess you could say that's how Mac and Noah met.
"Hey babe, have you seen Jen? I need to talk to her. She's been really weird lately." Noah was walking in the hallway with Mac, but couldn't seem to focus on her. He was worried about Jenna. She had been acting weird.
"Ugh," Mac scoffs "what is the problem with her? I told you to stop hanging out with her, she's like really bad for my rep."
Noah didn't understand what her problem was. Mac usually wasn't this cocky when she was around him only. "Mac what is your problem? I told you, before we even started dating, that Jenna is my best friend, and if you don't accept that, we're through. Whether you like it or not." Noah really liked Mac. Loved her, even. He hadn't told her that though, she's very sensitive to the word "love". But, Jen was his best friend. He wasn't about to lose a friendship over a girl. Jen had always been his number one. Noah turns around and sees Jen behind him. No wonder Mac was acting this way.
"Mac how many times do I have to tell you, stop acting like a — " Noah stops himself. "Please. Stop being rude in front of Jenna. This is why she thinks you're just using me."
"Fine. Sorry. I'll see you later," Mackenzie walks away, holding her hand up as if to say "don't chase after me".  Mackenzie didn't know exactly why she was so rude in front of other people. Maybe she doesn't want to seem vulnerable. Only one person is aware of her vulnerability, and that's Noah. She doesn't need anyone else knowing. She could lose her popularity if everyone knew how sensitive she actually was.
Mac, why are you acting this way?
She hears Noah's voice in her head. She freezes. What the heck? This can't be happening. She's going crazy. She regains her posture and keeps walking.
Mac I know you heard me. I didn't want to tell you until I thought you were ready. Mac, I can read your mind.
She turned around to notice Noah staring at her with a sympathetic expression. This isn't possible. This isn't a movie. She thinks to herself, What? No. This is crazy. Mac, snap out of it.
Mac, it's real. C-come here and let me explain. Noah hesitates for a minute. Should he really get her involved? It wasn't too late to act like she was crazy. Did she really wanna tell the only secret that kept Noah and Jenna special? He made up his mind and decided to tell her. Maybe Jenna would become friends with her, and wouldn't think that she's so bad. Mackenzie walks towards him slowly.
"Is this real, Noah?"
"Yes, Mac, it's real,"
"You mean to tell me, all this time you could read my uncensored thoughts, and you didn't think to tell me?" Mackenzie was furious. He knew everything about her. Even the things she didn't tell him.
"I'm sorry. I didn't want you to be afraid to be around me. I wasn't always reading your thoughts. I know how to turn it off, and I usually did when I was around you." Noah needed her to understand that he would never violate her privacy. Noah's face was scrunched with worry.
"Usually? Usually doesn't cut it Noah. How about never? Don't read my thoughts. That's wrong. Does Jenna know?" Mac was still confused by all of this. Maybe if Jenna didn't know this would be one thing that Mac and Noah had that him and Jenna didn't.
"No, Jenna doesn't know. But, I do need to tell you something." The two of them are standing in the hallway like idiots while everyone had gotten to class about 10 minutes ago. He motions for her to sit down on a bench with him "You might want to sit down for this."
