Betsy Holds the Reins

The is just some short story I wrote for my literature class a bit back. I've written more but I'll most likely not be posting them on here.

-------

I closed my eyes, sending a silent prayer up to the heavens. The red horse drawn wagon swayed side to side, moving crazily for a moment before suddenly taking a sharp turn to the left. Quickly, I turned back to my columns of figures, attempting to hide my thoughts of fear. I very well knew that at this point, my dear Betsy must've been panicking.

"Help!" She probably wanted to call out, "Uncle Henry, what do I do now?"

However, Elizabeth needed to learn this lesson to achieve anything in life. I couldn't do this for her-she could do it if she would just think for herself.

For long moments, Betsy managed to keep the wagon more or less on track. Just as my heart had finally started to recover, we started to move downhill at a lightning speed pace. Oh sweet Mother of God, please don't let me die like this! Once again, I could feel Elizabeth's panic, and once again, I ignored it.

The seconds turned into minutes, which turned into hours as Betsy slowly started to get the hang of the sport, now holding the reins with more confidence I've ever seen her possess. Joy radiated off of her and a small smile lived on her face, causing me to form a grin of my own. That's my Betsy!
