2 Weeks Later
"But Addy, you must come. Rolf, Hans, and the other boys keep asking me about you. You can't be so standoffish!"
Adeline frantically shook her head. Helga groaned in frustration before continuing, "Klaus agrees with me! People will start to think things... I mean, why wouldn't you want to go to a dance with the most eligible and, dare I say, handsome young men in Germany?"
Adeline blushed fiercely and ducked her head. At this, Helga gasped excitedly. "Hmmmmmm! I see. Perhaps you are scared of seeing a certain Dutch Kaiser?"
It was Adeline's turn to gasp. "Shhhhhh! He might hear you!" She whipped her head nervously back and forth until she spotted the gray-clad figure a couple hundred feet away. "I barely know him, Helga. Don't say such things! I just don't want to go to the dance, that's all."
Helga laughed so hard she snorted. "Yeah right. I see the way you look at him when we pass him in town. You're scared of what you'll do if he kisses you."
Adeline's face burned brighter. "If he kisses me! That's silly. He only talked to me in the first place because Klaus asked him to."
"Not true, Addy. His sister Eloise told me he asked her about you. She said he'd never talked about a girl before in front of his family. That's gotta mean something!" She started to say more but Adeline hushed her.
"He's coming our way! What do we do?" Adeline whispered.
"Um, well I for one have to run some errands. Bye bye Addy!" Helga blew a kiss and ran away giggling. Adeline didn't even have time to be irritated at her friend as she felt a hand brush her elbow.
"Let me carry these, Fraulein Sommers." She didn't fight the strong hands pulling away her grocery bags.
Dutch Kaiser was still as intimidating as ever, but Adeline couldn't help but feel excited in his presence. He was dark and strong and mysterious, and he had asked about her. Maybe he did like her a little bit.
"Please just call me Adeline." She fidgeted with her hands as they walked down the street. He noticed and a frown flashed across his face before it went back to stone.
"I'll call you Adeline if you call me by my first name," he countered. It was almost as if he knew how to make her blush. He cleared his throat before continuing, "You will come to the dance tomorrow, won't you?"
Adeline was shocked. Dutch Kaiser, a stern and gruff officer, out on the dance floor? "You go to the dances, Her- I mean... D-Dutch?"
"No, I don't, yet for some reason I have a feeling I'll see you there tomorrow. 7:00. Save me the first dance. Now I've got to leave for a meeting, maüschen. Be safe walking home."
I nodded, clutching my groceries to my chest. What is happening to me?
