"Just one pin here... and you're done! You look perfect!" Helga smoothed Adeline's hair and made a flourishing gesture. "Tada! Look in the mirror". Turning around, Adeline had to gasp.
"Is that really me? I love it! You are magnificent, Helga!" Adeline carefully stroked her soft curls and the little twist Helga had arranged in the back.
"Nicely done, Helga! Maybe you should go into hairdressing instead of the family business!" Esther tittered, braiding her own locks into a thick braid. Her giggles stopped when she saw Helga's face.
"Is there something wrong with flowers? I thought you liked them, Esther. Or are you more interested in banking now? Can't help your Jewish blood. Is accounting more your taste?" Helga snickered. Her pale lips curled in a sneer as Esther's face dropped.
Adeline frowned at Helga. "That sure was rude. Whatever do you mean? Esther was just praising your talent for hair".
Helga laughed scornfully, feigning a playful smile at Adeline. "Oh, I didn't mean anything by it, dear Esther. But Addy here really should listen to the radio more, right? Honestly Addy, you are behind on politics. You better brush up on them if you want something to talk about with Herr Kaiser". Helga poked Adeline in the side and laughed a little more to herself.
Adeline took the opportunity to change the subject. "How do you like my dress? I made it especially for my first big dance". She pulled a knee length dress with cap sleeves from her closet, showing off the red and white polka dots. Esther and Helga gasped.
"It's so darling! I love the pattern. Your officer won't be able to keep his eyes off you". Helga said. Adeline's face blushed as red as the dress she had started putting on.
"Ready Adeline? Klaus is picking us up at 6:45" Helga strode to the door as Adeline said goodbye to her granny and Esther, who had to babysit her sisters and brothers tonight.
Helga swung the door open and jumped back, started. "Oh! Oh, Oh Addy? I think I'm actually meeting Klaus at the flower stand. Your ride is here already." With that, Helga tottered out the door in her heels, leaving Adeline to her mysterious ride. Was it Dutch?
Her heart beating rapidly, Addy walked to the front door, fiddling with her hair. "Hello, ah oh.. Hi Leon". The boy standing at her doorway was not dark, but very fair; not intimidating, but very friendly. Leon Weber was a nice boy from her school, rather shy, so she was surprised by his sudden appearance. And, for some reason, she was disappointed. He blushed holding out his hand.
"Would you let me drive you to the dance?".
