Claire had been seriously considering ditching Luke when she ran into Mrs. Reys. As in, they collided, sending books and papers in all directions.
"Better get this cleaned up fast, or you'll be late for your math session with Luke." As if Claire needed to be reminded.
"Yeah... So, I'll just be going now..." Claire gathered her final book and rushed off to the library. Once there, she spotted Luke sitting alone at a table in the back of the room. She walked over and sat plopped down with a sigh. "Okay, let's just get this over with. What are we starting with?"
"Let's see... Well, we should probably make sure you understand how to solve basic algebraic equations." He said, rifling through all the papers until he found what he was looking for. He held one up. "I'll explain this to you and then we can solve it together."
While he was talking, Claire had been studying his features. He looked very familiar to her for some reason. His blond hair and tanned skin reminded her of a beach boy that she used to know. She blinked, a single tear running down her face. Before he could notice, she wiped it off and put on a fake smile.
"Okay, that makes sense to me. So, you first have to, uh, do the distribution thingy, right?" He nodded. "Then you, let's see, combine the like terms? Like all the x's and regular numbers?"
"That's right. Now, let's solve this equation here." Luke pointed to a problem halfway down the page. It looked hard, but Luke would be able to help if she needed it.
After an hour of stuggling through difficult math questions, Claire's phone buzzed.
MOM: It's about time to come home, honey
CLAIRE: Okay, I'll head home now.
"Hey Luke, I gotta go. See you tomorrow."
"Okay. Same time next week?"
Glancing over her shoulder on the way out the door, Claire nodded yes.
