Kartik was running late to the office. With Aryan aka Shubham trying to get him arrested, the holiday itself, it had been really a set back for him, in terms of the new project. Not that he minded of course, some memories of Kairamoon were still enough to bring a smile to his face. It had been a good and much required holiday for both of them.

But now that he was back, he had things to prove, pinnacles to reach, dreams to be fulfilled.

He was so busy these past few days with the work, not that dad and chachu hadn’t tried to keep things running, they indeed had, and very well too. But he had his way, and his desires with the project, of which they hadn’t been aware.

Seeing him so overworked, his dad had hired a Personal Assistant for him. She was called Shireen. She was efficient to say in the least. She had joined only 3 days back. And knew her job like the back of her hand. He found files organised, as per his liking, documents with all the changes that he desired, to say he was doing much better due to her presence.

“Miss you Jaan” popped on my screen. Naira had been very understanding in all this, she didn’t pressurise me to turn home early, neither did she call every hour, while that can be a complaint from me to her. She knew why I needed to do this, not like she didn’t or couldn’t help me, but she left me alone, as she realised it wasn’t her battle.

I was about to type my reply to her when Shireen entered, with a warm cup of coffee. She didn’t miss anything ever did she?

“Good Morning Sir. Here’s your coffee.” She said, coming to stand beside me. Leaning over a bit she kept it on the other side of table, very easily accessible to me. How thoughtful of her.

“Thank you Shireen. Didn’t I tell you, you needn’t do all this? I can very well get my coffee.” I said. She may be my PA, but I didn’t want to make any of my employees do the work, that would be my personal. They were paid to do office work only.

“Yes you did, but Sir, I was bringing one for myself, so got one for you too. We can have it together you know, as friends. While you can tell me what work do you expect today.” She said. Her hand resting on my forearm.

“Well if you put it like that? Then who am I to deny the lady?” I replied. I liked her casual demeanour. She was very friendly, and very helpful. She liked her work she said.

“Sir, I was called by Mehtas today, they wanted some briefing over what should be their role, and what would be your terms. I must tell you they are very insistent or not compromising their demands at all.”

“Well when are coworkers anything but? They wouldn’t be businessmen if not insistent. I may have a few ideas to sedate them, but I don’t think I must take away all the incentive. As it will guarantee a better work.” I mused. Yes, dad said, I was a bit to liberal when it came to my employees and associates. That I gave in to their demands, a touch too easily. But I believed that if a person, was given enough incentive to stay loyal, I’ll get maximum benefits only then.

“Yes, of course you are right as always, Kartik. I wonder how do you manage all this?” she said, leaning a bit forward, her hand brushing my forearm.

“Well, it helps I have been a mere employee.” I replied.

“It’s very gracious of you, to go and work inspite of owning the company yourself” she said with a smile. Tad bit more than required...but I ignored the stupid nag on back of my mind.

“Well, I wasn’t really on good terms with my family back then. It was more of a necessity than, sacrifice.” I countered. Which wasn’t the whole truth, but she needn’t know everything did she.

“Well Sir, I must say our break is over. And our associates would be expecting us at 4 in the Cafe.” She said.

“The Cafe, why? Why didn’t you just call them to the office.” I asked her.

“They had some work beside the cafe, and were really insistent that we meet them there. So I agreed. After all we wanted some of ours demands accepted.” She told me. Fair enough. I dismissed her with a nod of my head. Staring my screen, eager to go home and drink some real caffeine made by her.

---the cafe----

We entered the cafe and waited, having already reserved a table for us. I see she had reserved a secluded table for us, well enough we will not be disturbed too much by the bustle.

We waited for almost half an hour. After which she said, “I’m really hungry sir. I will go get some food for myself. If you would like anything?”

“Well wait here Shireen, I will get something for both of us. God swear I need food after a long day. Meanwhile why don’t you call Mehtas. They already want to meet at a unconventional place, plus they are late. If they aren’t interested, they might just tell us and we can search for better partners.” I replied. I was getting irritated, and why not, we have been waiting for long, didn’t they at the very least have the courtesy to call and inform of their delay.

I got some pasta for her, and some coke for myself. Standing in the queue of food, I checked my phone and realised I hadn’t replied to Naira in the morning. And yes she would be fuming. She didn’t mind me working per say. But she always made sure, I knew that she was missing me. And how much I adored that.

N – Hi. Same boring day at the academy. I wish there was some function around the corner. And did I tell you that I loved you since the morning? <3

K – Same old work jaan! Waiting for a client. And you did, but I still like to know it again. Miss you <3

She pinged me immediately.

N – miss you too. And you didn’t reply to my love yous. *huffs*

K – Oh. I love you jaan. :* Wait for me for dinner tonight.

I went back with food to Shireen and we munched on. And the clients finally decided to grace us with their presence. We talked about our deals, and they agreed. Shireen was a really good employee. She knew what and when to say, and her happy nature made people believe her easily. With this feather in her hat, we decided to call it a day. And I was just dying to go in the arms of Naira

Naira’s POV

He came home early that day. And after many days I was finally going to spend time with him. Not that I didn’t want him to work, but I missed him. And after dance academy, and home the whole day, I usually slept by the time he came.

He would still every night climb in the bed and cuddle with me for a while before sleeping, I realised that after getting up every morning. But enough of sleep talks. I would finally spend the rest of my day with him.

I was also going to ask him why he hadn’t told me about his meeting in the cafe. I could have met him there. I only knew because dad told me.

When he entered the room, I couldn’t be more happy to see him and I just swung on to him. He a bit startled twirled me around a bit to control the momentum.

“I missed you Kartik.”

“I missed you Jaan” he said, breathing in my scent, smelling my hair. I was doing the same with him.

“Do you want to go out for dinner tonight?” he asked me. Who was I to deny my man.

I got ready, and he did too. We stepped out to the restaurant and ordered our food, chatted a while by the time food arrived, holding each others hands.

He excused himself for a call just before the food arrived, while I waited. When he came his face was fallen, I asked him, “I have to go Jaan.  Shireen just called me to tell that the papers Mehtas needed were in my laptop. And you know that laptop can be opened by two person only. You or me. You begin your dinner, and I’ll try to come back in a jiffy.”

It was work again. But I nodded. A bit disappointed, but there was nothing he can do. I smiled for his sake, for his peace of mind. And well I had really good food for me.

He didn’t turn up, until very late in night. And I for some reason was waiting for him. When he came he got into our bed and whispered, “I’m sorry Jaan. To leave you alone like that, on the day I had planned.” I just snuggled close to him and tried to find peace in his arms. It wasn’t that I was not disappointed. Yes I was. But I didn’t want him to feel bad about something he couldn’t control, neither did I want to lie about it.

He took me in his arms and eased me to sleep. Knowing that I was upset, his act an unsaid apology, his love. And I was happy that whatever it may be he will always ease me to sleep.

He left early next morning, note by my bedside,

‘Good Morning, jaan. Important clients turning up today! I may be busy for the night as well! Will miss you so much XOXO :*
PS – don’t miss me too much.
PPS – I love you <3’

I smiled. But he could have woke me up. My heart complained. But I consoled it, after all this was necessary. And I again got myself busied in another day, newer expectations, and newer achievements.

My students arranged for a party tonight in a fancy restaurant. Let’s spoil our teacher for teaching us, they said. We were set for the night.

I got dressed, and was ready to dine with them.

Kartik’s POV

Work was going beautifully. The only thing I was upset about that I couldn’t spend almost any time with Naira. She didn’t complaint, she never did. But I wanted to spend time with her. With her and not by talking to her sleeping self.

By the time I managed reaching home, she slept. After getting ready for bed, I used to take her I’m my arms, and whispered my day to her. Well it was a habit to me. To talk to her about everything, but alas. She was already asleep. And whispering wouldn’t wake my kumbhkaran.

I was planning to go home early today, to go dine with her. I told her I would be busy for the night. Just a little surprise for her, seeing her happy face. I even gave a day off to Shireen.

How ever good that woman was, she literally over did it! Always being everywhere. Yes my work was always done, thanks to her presence. But she was a tad annoying, she did talk a lot, and well there were only so many ways I could subtly ignore her. I would have to pay attention to my PA if I needed any work done.

But today I didn’t want any distractions. Today definitely would be my day with Naira. God knows that we could use one now.

I wrapped up all the documents and locked my cabin, only to find Shireen still at her desk. I went to her and asked, “Hey, I told you to take a day off today. How come you are still here?”

“Sir.” She said, a bit startled by my presence, recollecting herself, “Oh yes, you told me I could go. But I definitely do not have any plans for the night. And I live alone here, so I thought I might as well get pending work wrapped up, and you know demand for a holiday sometime when I would actually use it.” She winked at me.

Err. Yes that did make sense. I just gave her a holiday, what if she didn’t plan to use it. It was her choice after all. Well I didn’t want my employees working when I clearly was enjoying my evening.

“Hey, why don’t you accompany to my house? My wife would be delighted to meet you. She can rest a little in peace knowing you are here to take care of my work.” I asked her. Well that’s true, Naira had been asking about her a few days back. She had this weird indescribable look whenever her name propped up. She’ll rest in a little peace once she knew her. I thought.

“Umm. I don’t think that’s a good idea sir. I would definitely not like to intrude upon your personal time. And God knows that you could use some time alone with your wife. You work almost the same hours as me, and we’ll your wife sure has a lot of patience I must say” she said.

I smiled. Of course she said something about Naira. Well those words can be opposites. Patience and Naira. But it’s true that she had been really understanding of my work past few days. And I was grateful and a bit upset too. If only she had been a bit demanding, we wouldn’t have been longing.

“You sure you don’t want to meet my family?” I confirmed again.

“Positive Sir.” She said. I smiled and told her not to wait for too long. I rushed home only to find that she had other plans for herself for the night.

Hmph. So much for a surprise lover boy. I scolded myself. The least you could do was confirm she didn’t have other plans. How stupid of you Kartik?

I tracked where Naira was, thanks to the Facebook facilities, and went to surprise her at the same place. After all I couldn’t let the whole evening go waste, could I?

I got my bike out, and got dressed in casual T-shirt. It had been a long time we had been on a bike. And she loved bikes too. On my way to the hotel, I found Shireen standing for a taxi.

I stopped my bike, and offered her a lift. She agreed. And said, “I didn’t know Kartik Goenka rid a bike?”

“There are many things you don’t know Shireen. Bike is as close to me as Naira.” I replied. Yes it was of course

“Boys and their toys” she replied. Resting her hand on my shoulder.

“Well you could say that.” I shook my head. Girls never did understand did they? Well thank God my Naira wasn’t those conventional girls. She liked my darling as much as I did.

I checked in the hotel, and saw Naira with the people in her academy. And asked the waiter to give us a table for two. As she asked me to accompany dinner with her.

I sat at the table after pulling chair for her. And waited for Naira to wrap up. So that I could take her away for some time.

Naira’s POV

In between the dinner I saw Kartik enter. He was dressed casually, he was definitely not on work, and he was on bike with another girl. He told me through a note early in morning, “I will be busy for the night.” And this is where he was busy?

I texted him, just to be safe and not assume the worst.

N – where are you Kartik? Missing you.

He replied immediately

K – At work Jaan. Missing you too. What’s up with you?

Okay so he definitely was lying. This was no work place. And he texted me a lie too. The man was with another girl, and wasn’t telling me why. Not that I doubted his infidelity, but he indeed was lying here, and for no apparent reason either.

When he chatted with the female, I fumed more. The guy hasn’t talked to me in weeks. My husband hasn’t held a conversation with me, and here he sits chatting away his life with this woman. Smiling for God knows what.

I continued sipping on my drink. I had to show this one now, enough of his work. If he had time to dine in restaurants then he definitely has time for me. Gulping the whole bottle of drink down my throat, I stood and walked to him. More like dragged myself.

I stumbled yet again close to his table, and he came in time to hold me. And understood I was drunk, “Jaan? You got drunk?”

“Yesss.. I got drunk.” I slurred a bit.

“Why?” he smirked, amused.

“So that you talk to me!” I said.

“Sir? I must leave!” the woman interrupted.

“Yes you should.” I replied to her, coldly. “My husband will be busy from right this moment.” Alcohol had removed all the inhibitions, and I had no qualms putting my hands over my husband, and protecting him if needed.

Kartik watched the woman, and tried to apologise to her. “Why don’t you apologise to me? As clearly you said that you were going to be busy for the night?” I said.

“Naira. Come on. Let’s go.” He said pulling me.

“No I’m not going. Tell me. Why did you lie to me?” I asked him

“Jaan. Listen we can talk outside.” He said again

“No I want to talk here. Now.” I said. Stomping my feet this time around.

Kartik’s POV

She was clearly drunk. And people were starting to turn to look at what was happening.

“Jaan stop creating a scene.” I whispered yet again

“I’m not creating a scene. I am talking to my husband.” She went to a couple who were staring, “Do you think talking to your husband is creating a scene?” she asked the couple. Huffing.

The woman shook her head. The man followed her cue knowing what was best for him. Huh. All men, they had no option but to listen when their wives spoke. Well I was sure in a soup. So much for a surprise Kartik? I patted myself yet again. The plan was really going down the drain.

“Jaan come here. And we will talk.” I told her. She carefully walked to me, I all but picked her up, while the man who had just nodded his head, gave me a thumbs up. Experienced guy I must say. I smiled while Naira punched me in back, and shouted at me to get her down.

I kept her down near the bike and told her, “Talk.” Well I was a bit agitated, but amused at the same time. The woman surely was a handful, not that I minded.

“Why won’t you talk to me?” she asked making a cute face, while all I wanted to do was kiss her.

“But I am talking to you.” I replied, tucking her hair behind her ear.

“No. You lied. You were at hotel, while you said you were working. And who was this girl?” she asked again

“She was Shireen. My PA. And yes I lied, you weren’t supposed to know I was here.” I looked at her accusingly. For spoiling my surprise,  her surprise.

“Why, you used to tell me everything. Why not now?” she said, pouting.

“Coz Jaan, this was a surprise for you.” I said, holding her face between my hands, trying to pacify her.

“What surprise?” she asked.

“Well surprise is at home.” I replied.

She brightened up at the thought. “let’s go home then”

“Umm. No I don’t think that’s great idea. Anymore.” I replied. Of course it wasn’t. She was drunk. It wasn’t dead in the night yet. I couldn’t hide her from people, and well, dadi would not be too happy seeing this.

So home was definitely not an option. “But what about my surprise?” she whined.

“Well I can always give that to you tomorrow. How about? Only you and me for tonight?” I asked her. This evening would really be recalled for a long time now. I called up a hotel and asked them to arrange a room for two, even if not that surprise I could still give her some surprise.

I rode very carefully to the hotel, bike was such a bad idea for today. She wanted to dance on the bike, while I concentrated on her as well as the bike. The passers-by were too interested in girl acting behind me, all I could do was glare at them.

After reaching the hotel, I picked her up, bridal style, because she didn’t want to walk anymore. Her feet hurt she said.

I was only happy to oblige. Carrying her to the room, I asked her to close her eyes. “Why?” she cross questioned.

“Can you for once just listen to me? I am your husband. Pati ki baat sunna sikho” I said.

“I know Mr. Husband, it’s just that you don’t talk a talk a lot to me these days. To adat nahi rahi aapki.” She said dramatically.

“Point taken. Now close your eyes.” I repeated.

And got her to stand behind a table, switched on the fan. She opened her eyes to the shower of flowers. There was a cake in front of her in her favourite flavour. She smiled at me.

“Thank you?” she asked.

“For being you.” I replied.

I fed some cake to her, purposefully smearing her lips a bit. When she tried to make me eat, I shook my head and kissed her, tasting the cake, the alcohol, and my Naira. I was amazed at how deeply she affected me, even after all this while. That this action, never lost its beauty. She jumped on me, wrapping her hands around my neck, her legs entwined behind my back. Deepening the kiss. Trying to feel what she wanted to, the same feeling which I missed.

No we weren’t apart, we weren’t fighting, it wasn’t difficult times. But even these normal life which happens, sometimes takes away the attention your partner deserves. It was both physical and emotional deprivation, from the constant missing for each other that we had.

When we both emerged for air, I took her to the washroom, removed her make up gently.

“There is my Naira” I said pecking her forehead, once I was done. Make up was all okay, but I loved the person she was beneath it.

“But where is my Kartik?” she asked. Pulling me by my neck, trying to kiss me.

“Jaan come, I’ll tuck you in.” I said. I knew what would happen if I didn’t make her stop. And she was drunk. I didn’t want it to happen with her in this state.

“No. I don’t want to go in. I want you and now.” She said adamantly.

“You are drunk Jaan, you need to sleep. Come I’ll tuck you in.” I replied.

Naira’s POV

Well time for getting what I wanted.

“I’m not drunk Mendak.” I replied. I wasn’t foolish enough to knowingly drink the whole bottle. I had, had some wine. And that was it. I was acting it to my benefit, but it no more was going to give me what I wanted. He was too much of a gentleman for that.

He double took on me? “Every drunk always said – I am not drunk. Come with me, or shall I take you up again.”

“Show time.” I whispered very close to his ear. And traced my finger down his cheek. He looked exactly what I wanted him to look like – dumbfounded, baffled, bewildered.

I walked like a drunk man should till the end of room, and came back doing a catwalk, stripping my clothes slowly, there had to be no doubt in his mind, I wasn’t drunk.

Barely dressed, I reached back to him, his mouth open, I kissed him slowly, seductively. He responded after some time. When I finally pulled back, “You devil.” He yelled.

“Oh come on! You were enjoying the act. Don’t act smart now.” I replied.

“But I actually brought you here thinking you were drunk.” He replied.

“I’m not complaining, am I?” I replied. Smirking this time.

“You devil” he said again. And pulled me close to him.

“But your Devil.” I replied. I said, nibbling at his lips, his scratchy jaw.

“Yes. All mine.” He replied, kissing me soundly. How much had I missed this? He went on deepening the kiss, and I continued to hang on to his lips, his arms holding me as my savior.

“Make love to me?” I asked, when he pulled, leaning on to my forehead.

“I thought you’ll never ask.” He replied.
