Chapter 3
I stepped into the lunchroom and was immediately pushed into the crowd. I scanned the room for the mystery boy but I felt my heart sinking when I had no luck. An excruciating amount of pain throbbed in my foot after someone stomped on it. I shot a glare in the direction of the culprit but it vanished as soon as I set my eyes on a familiar pair of warm brown ones. My breathing hitched a little as I made my way towards him not taking my eyes from his at all. As I neared him, the food in front of him caught my eye.
“You really didn’t have to buy me lunch,” I gasped.
He shrugged “Naw it’s really no problem, but I wasn’t sure what you liked to eat,” he gestured to the food choices in front of him. I laughed a little, his effort was amusing.
“I prefer the sandwich, but hey, you had excellent judgment when it came to the drink. Pink lemonade is my favorite.”
“I thought so.” He let out a small smile. It wasn’t like the one before, this one was his usual and it didn’t quite meet his eyes. I was determined to see the other one again. I carefully took a seat across from him while trying not to look as anxious as I felt. He handed me my food right before the awkward silence fell in between us.
“Why are you talking to me?” I blurted out after a couple moments. I immediately kicked myself for being so blunt. Even though the question was eating me I could’ve been more smooth about asking it. He let out a small sigh but didn’t answer. I couldn’t take the deafening silence anymore so I quickly added on.
“I didn’t mean it in the rude way that it came out, it’s just that I don’t understand why your barely taking interest now. I mean you didn’t even know my name and we’ve had PLENTY of classes together.” I quickly finished after I realized that I was starting to babble. I pulled my hands off of the table and started twisting them. It’s something that I do when I’m nervous. He thought for a long moment before he answered, probably the longest moment in history, or so it felt like it to me. He cleared his throat before he started to speak and I let a breath out that I hadn’t realized I’d been holding in. Boy, he was having some effect on me, but not too much I assured myself.
“You’re different.” He said, I let a frustrated sigh out at his response. Right before I was going to cut in he continued. “Your beautiful and not in the usual sexy way that I go for. You have internal beauty and I want to see it.”
“Oh.” Oh? Really Mikayla? Your so lame! His response kept me speechless for a while.
“Well you are quite the charmer. Other girls weren’t lying about you,” I joked in attempt to lighten the mood. He just looked the other way. I took this opportunity to shove my last couple bites into my mouth.
“Listen Mikayla, I don’t want you to listen to other people about me from now on. Wherever this goes just know I’m different.” He stated still looking the other way. Wherever this goes? Was he that confident that I had that much interest in him? Yeah he was cute but I just met the kid officially.
“What do you mean ‘You’re different’?” I narrowed my eyes at him. He shrugged finally looking at me once again. I was going to shoot a sarcastic remark at him but I stuck in my throat as I realized maybe hes right. The last relationship I heard about him having had been with Tiffany about two years ago, and the breakup was on her. He had had a couple flings since then once with my friend, but he didn’t let it go too far. He stood up just as the dismissal bell rang. I found myself starring at his chest; he was a wrestler meaning he was bound to have a nice body under that shirt. My eyes crept up meeting his. He slowly leaned down causing my heart to stop. He neared my face but changed directions and I felt his lips practically on ear. He opened his mouth causing his warm breath to send a tingling trail down my neck.
“I really enjoyed our lunch,” He whispered while slipping a piece of paper in front of me. Before I knew it he was gone. I looked down at the digits staring back at me.
I walked towards my class in a daze.
“Mikayla!” Someone shouted from down the hall. I looked behind me and spotted Nicole, I quickly debated whether to keep walking or not. I stopped in my tracks after deciding that it would be useless because we were heading to the same class, shed get me one way or another. She caught up almost out of breath.
“I’ve been shouting your name for a while, where were you at lunch? We were making plans for next week to get dresses for the dance,” she exclaimed. Oh yeah. The dance.
“Sorry,” I replied in a flat tone.
“Well where were you?” Nicole interrogated.
“I sat with Alex, he bought me lunch.”
“Alex Ramirez?” Her eyes almost popped out of her head. I have to admit it was an amusing sight.
“Uh, yeah, why is everyone giving me that response?” I snapped.
“Sorry it’s just…He’s not really the type you go for.” She had her eyes glued to the ground.
“I didn’t go for him, he came for me. And what’s the problem? He’s hot isn’t he?”
“Yeah he is. I guess I never really looked at him that way.” She said right before we parted. I walked to my seat and examined the board. A test today? How had I forgotten!
“Good afternoon class!” My teacher said a little too enthusiastically while she handed out our tests. “No talking you may begin.” I stared blankly at the problems in front of me. Did we even learn this I thought while struggling to the end. Math isn’t my best subject and it isn’t the most exciting either.
After I finished my test I walked it to the front and made it back to my seat without stumbling. I feel self-conscious during a test about everything I do, like I’m gana be the one to trip and land on my face in a dead silent room. I carefully took out a sheet of paper trying not to make noise and started doodling on it. My personal bubble was popped with the feeling of someone’s eyes boring into my head. I snapped my head up in my ex’s direction expecting him to be the one starring. He took our break up to the heart and was slightly bitter about it. I found him staring blankly at his test. I examined the room in search of the culprit and settled on a pair of dark brown eyes staring back at me. His eyes were captivating and they were surrounded by a dark sea of long eyelashes. I averted my gaze somewhere else before looking down. I peeked back up to see if he was still looking and sure enough, Brandon still had his eyes on me. Suddenly I felt self-conscious; I pulled down my dress making sure it wasn’t too short. I looked back up and this time he wasn’t starring, He was checking me out! My jaw dropped open at the fact that he wasn’t even trying to hide it. Didn’t this kid know I hated him? He turned around with a smirk that I wanted to smack off of his face. I looked down and examined myself; my breasts didn’t look any bigger so what was so different about me today? Sure I was use to male attention, but not from these boys. The bell signaled the end of the day and I rushed out of class.
“Mikayla!” Nicole shouted while grabbing my arm, “We need to make plans for next week.” Seriously! What was with her and this stupid dance?
“Yeah yeah yeah, just text me, I got to go,” I lied. I got out of her grasp and made my way to my car.
