"The soul knows no anguish greater than to take a breath that begins with love and ends with grief."
~Steven Erikson ~
There often comes a point in everyone's life when you are given a chance, to continue on the path of self-destruction or to stand still and introspect, to find where it was that one went wrong and then seek to make amends. Few are cognizant of this chance and fewer still have the strength to avail of it.
It was by a strange quirk of fate, that all four of them found themselves at this point at the same time. Maybe, it was because their destinies were far more entwined than the ties of blood and bonds of the heart indicated. Siblings married to siblings. Half-sisters wedded to cousins. They loved their siblings and their soul mates, there was no doubt about it, but maybe the fault was they loved too much. Or maybe, the meaning and intent of that emotion was lost in interpretation. It was possible that they loved to a point where it translated to obsession or being blind to the flaws of the ones they loved. Or, yet again, it could be that they were adored to such an extent that the other was taken for granted or it was forgotten that such adoration would need equivalent, if not equal, reciprocation.
The easiest way out would be to blame the other and hold him or her responsible for setting things right. But life is not so simple either, irrespective of the stance taken in public, at night when the only company they have is their thoughts, their conscience would speak to them, if only they care to listen.

Litost - [Lee' - toast] Litost is an untranslatable Czech word and means a 'a state of agony and torment created by the sudden sight of one's own misery'.
A detailed write up has been given in the notes at the end of this Vignette.
The whole Vignette is formatted and set against the song - "let her go" by passenger. The youtube link is given below:
Please note - that though I have retained most of the lyrics as is, I have made it "gender" neutral so to be suitable for both the couples (he/she/him/her/they/them) Please forgive this literal literary licence taken.
