The sun's rays flooded into my room through my blinds and my eyes fluttered open from my long slumber. I sat up and rubbed my eyes smiling at the warmness the sun was giving to me. The day greeted me with kindness and I felt like today was going to be promising. Today was my first day of being free. Being free from that hellhole called high school. Any school for that matter. I have finally graduated. It was a great feeling to have.
I got up and put on my robe as I drank a sip of the glass of water I poured last night. I took the elastic that was around my wrist and pulled my hair up into a messy bun. I didn't understand how they were today's style considering that you put no thought into the hairstyle. The only good thing that came from it was that my hair looked attractive without me having to do anything.
My feet plodded down the staircase and the smell of bacon and waffles filled my senses. I grinned when I saw my father putting his best effort into making a breakfast good enough for my picky little brother and big brother for that matter. When he saw me, his eyes lit up like fireworks on the fourth of July.
"Good morning, Flora," he smiled.
"Good morning," I said returning the smile as I hugged him from behind.
He continued to work on the breakfast quietly as he hummed a soft tune. I sat down in a seat at the table and looked out the window thinking of what to do with my life. My father sat down a mug in front of me and quickly returned to his work. I thanked him and drank the hot coffee he sat in front of me. I heard footsteps and turned around to see my older brother, Adam. He kissed my forehead quickly and went to the coffee pot to make some coffee.
"Hey, Adam," I smiled.
"Good morning, Flo," he greeted back.
He whispered something to Dad and I narrowed my eyes at them. They both looked back at me and saw my expression. They laughed at my confusion and I shook my head at them. They are so juvenile, I thought to myself.
"What's so funny?" I asked demanding an answer.
My dad put some bacon and two waffles on a plate and put it in front of me as he sat down in a chair next to me.
"Well, I was just thinking if maybe before you start college, that you would want a summer job at our marina?" Dad said.
My eyes widened and I smiled nodding anxiously.
He laughed and said,"It's settled then. You start today. We have to leave in no less than an hour."
"Thank you so much, Dad," I said as I started to eat.
I have always wanted to help my father at the marina. It seemed like a great job to have, because you could be on the bay all the time, and you could meet new people. Ever since we moved to Miami four years ago after my mother died, I haven't really been close to anybody. That includes my family too. I built up walls that couldn't come down. I was an emotional wreck. That was until I met my best friend, Ashton.
I met Ashton at the beginning of high school here in Fort Lauderdale, and I couldn't have asked for a better friend. I remember when I was alone at a table at lunch and he came over and started to talk to me. He was amazing. As time went by, I met more of his Australian friends, Luke, Michael, and Calum . They were like my guardians if you want to put it that way. They were over protective ever since they met me. I know that would seem annoying to people, but it made me know that they really loved me.
The only bad thing is that whenever I met a really attractive guy, he would get over protective and ruin my chances of having a relationship. It made me angry everytime, but I couldn't stay mad at him. Everytime I would get mad, I would feel extremely guilty, because I would remember that Ashton had lost his father to another woman in that same year. He even told me one night that he wanted to be the man that his father never was. Point is, he has exceeded what he had wanted to be.
