This is the start of something beautiful

This is the start of something new

You are the one who'd make me lose it all

You are the start of something new

Rufus Carlin was known by his friends to blurt weird and random things, usually terrible puns in a desperate attempt to impress Jiya, or jokes to lighten the mood if they were stuck in some God awful ancient hellhole.

But one one-liner threw Wyatt completely off guard.

The two men were sitting in a car, waiting on Lucy, talking about their last mission.

A man had shoved the historian, and Rufus was informing Wyatt that the way the soldier reacted suggested some deep feelings he had for Lucy.

Wyatt, of course, was attempting to argue that that was ridiculous, but Rufus blurted a one-liner that made Wyatt's heart drop.

"You're in love with Lucy, just admit it!" Rufus exclaimed.

Wyatt felt as if all the air had been sucked out of the vehicle.

Quickly, he tried to come up with an excuse, a way to get out of the conversation.

But he couldn't, so he just sat quietly, staring down at his hands in his lap, waiting for Rufus to blurt something else abrupt.

The pilot, however, was silent.

Wyatt could feel his eyes on him.

Finally, the master sergeant looked up and stared out the windshield as he quietly said, "I love her so much."

He faced the pilot.

"But Rufus," he looked him right in the eye, "don't you dare tell her. I have no idea if she feels the same or not, and I really don't wanna scare her off."

He paused, a forlorn look crossing his face before he turned back to the windshield.

"Lucy means the world to me," Wyatt stated simply. "I can't lose her like I lost Jessica. I would never, ever forgive myself if I let that happen."

Rufus chuckled. "Dude, I can guarantee you that Lucy isn't going anywhere. She's crazy about you, Wyatt."

"She is?"

"I mean, it's really obvious."

The men were interrupted when the back door opened and the historian herself clambered into the backseat.

Wyatt's heart rose to his throat when she met his eye in the rearview mirror and grinned.

"I'm taking this room to myself. Y'all can have the one down the hall," Rufus states, slamming the hotel room door in Lucy and Wyatt's faces.

Lucy sighs. "Guess we're bunkmates tonight."

"Don't get too excited."

She smiles. "Nothing against you. I just-"

"You just what?"

"I kinda snore..."

Wyatt snorts. "So do I. I can guarantee you that I snore worse. Yours are adorable."

He picks up her suitcase and leads her down the hall.

"Wait-" Lucy says, "how do you know my snores are 'adorable'?"
