Chapter Four: The Hunter
Nico sat amongst the other members of his pack-a scarce hand full thanks to Del Rossi and his lackeys. Nico's stomach turned at the thought of the Romulus Alpha. He was as bad as the man who had sired his line. Nico was Alpha of the Remus pack-thanks to Del Rossi killing his father a month back.
Nico and his father had known their lives would be short. But they had both been prepared. Prepared for the war that was undoubtedly ahead of them. Almost eighteen years ago, the blood moon rose in the night sky. And they knew. They knew that the one being that could ruin them had finally arrived.
Nico's family had always trained for the task of killing Diana's chosen. Ever since Nico could remember he had trained-learned every possible martial art, mastered every weapon, pushed himself to the edge of breaking so that they could go on.
To the Romulus pack, Diana's chosen was a God send-a weapon that would make every descendant of Remus under their control. And that was precisely the reason why Nico's family had to put a stop to the prophecy-no matter what.
Tonight, Nico thought. Tonight he'd stop the prophecy.
He and his father had planned this moment for so long, it seemed unreal. But it was real. Horribly real. They had agreed that if by chance the Chosen arrived before they turned eighteen, before they experienced their first change and their true powers awakened-that they had to exterminate them. Immediately.
Nico picked up a silver knife from the round coffee table, and studied the fine curve of the blade. It had been in their family for generations. The ceremonial tool that they had blessed with their blood to kill the Chosen.
"Nico?"
Nico turned to see Bianca standing beside him, her hand placed on his shoulder. Bianca was, without a doubt, a beautiful girl. Dark hair and eyes, flawless olive toned skin, a lithe, modle's body and a striking personality to boot. She had always made her interest in Nico apparent, but Nico had never felt the need-the spark.
"Bianca," he said in a stern, neutral tone, as he sheathed the knife and tucked it inside the waist band of his boxers.
"Nico, please let me come. I can help-"
"No. You have to stay and keep watch. I wont allow anyone else to come on this mission. Only Horatio and I go, and that is final." he said, allowing a bit of his Alpha powers leak into his voice.
Bianca glared at him. "You're going to get yourself killed! This is suicide!"
Nico gave her a hard look that revealed nothing, not a single flicker of his inner turmoil was reveled. This was his duty, his destiny as Alpha. He wouldn't allow any member of his pack risk themselves. If Horatio hadn't pestered, threatened and nagged, he wouldn't have been coming at all. His beta was as annoying as a fly.
"You are staying, Bianca. And that's all I want to here about the subject. If you so much as try to follow us, I swear I will throw you to Del Rossi myself."
He sneered the name. But the threat hit home. Bianca cowered, just before throwing him a hateful glare and storming off. Nico sighed, and continued strapping weapons onto his body.
"You were a bit too hard on her, my friend." Horatio said as he appeared beside Nico, loading a hand pistol.
"She wont learn unless I'm hard on her-she thinks she knows more than I do. My father would never allow such-"
"Your dad," Horatio interrupted, as he closed the gun, giving him a look. "would have been gentler about it. As for Bianca . . . she cares about you Nic. She cares about this pack. She doesn't want our Alpha to die."
Nico sighed, bracing one hand on the table, as the other raked through his disheveled hair.
"I'm just . . . I'm not him, Ratio. I can't be him no matter how hard I try. I'm me. And right now I'm scared shitless that I wont be able to save us. So many lives are depending on me. I cannot fail, Ratio. I can't."
Horatio frowned, laying a hand on his friends shoulder. "Nicoli, we have lost so many people to this blood feud. Think of them-of your father, your mother and everyone else. This is their revenge. This will end our suffering forever. After tonight . . . we will be free."
Nico said nothing. He stared into space, his eyes unseeing. He nodded slowly, before straightening to his full height.
"Yes. We will." he grabbed the gun from Horatio, sticking it inside his inner coat pocket. "Tonight this nightmare ends"
