Chapter Six: Story Time

Michele walked me to the house in silence-he hadn't been very talkative since the incident at the club. He seemed pissed off for some reason-like someone had literally pissed in his Cheerios. I was too-I don't, maybe shocked?-to even ask what he was so upset about.

The entire night seemed unreal-from the ride there to meeting that boy to the blow up afterwards. More anything I was really confused.

"Thanks again for taking me out tonight," I said warily as he brought me to the door. "I guess I'll be seeing around then."

I turned to leave, but before my fingers even brushed the door knob, Michele grabbed me, yanking me back, crashing into him.

I gaped up at him in surprise, his black eyes were light-less orbs of fury, slowly smoldering under the surface. His grip on my hand was iron clad, no matter how much I fought, tugged, and twisted, he wouldn't relinquish me.

"What's wrong with you?" I yelled up at him fighting the itch I was having to plant my face smack dab in the middle of his pretty face.

"That boy is dangerous," he said, his voice low, concealed in warning. "He is an enemy of our family-if you ever find your self alone with him again, you are to run as fast as you can and find either myself, your cousin or one of the other."

I cocked an eye brow at him, my anger mingling with skepticism.

"Please," I sneered. "I can take care of myself-and he wasn't the one throwing punches. From where I was standing it seemed like you and my cousin and your little gang were the dangerous ones."

"We do whatever it takes to protect our own," Michele replied stonily, the expression on his face unreadable.

I gave a snort, crossing my arms defiantly across my chest. "What are you? A mob boss?"

Michele's lush mouth quirked up ward into something that was too dark to be called a smile.

"If you only knew, Cia." Michele said, his voice just a above a whisper.

His words sent tendrils of ice through my body, fear blossoming in my chest.

Michele moved away from me, his eyes fastening on the black sky above us.

"Did you know our families blood lines can be traced all the way back to Romulus and Remus?" Michele said, his eyes never leaving the sky. "They were the twin brothers who founded Rome. In a dispute over the land the fought-ending with Romulus killing Remus. What the story doesn't tell us is that there was a prophecy made to the two families-that one day a savior would come to reunite the two houses of Rome."

I regarded him skeptically. "What does that have to do with us-with those guys back at the club?"

"They belong to Remus-ever since that day all those centuries ago, they've been out for our blood. They wont rest until they've eradicated the entire Romulus blood line-and that includes you too, Cia."

I frowned at him. Thinking back I hadn't felt in danger-I hadn't been afraid of the boy. What I had felt was the exact opposite-seeing him had been like . . . like finding my way home.

"No," I said shaking my head furiously. "I don't buy it. There's no way he's like that-"

"He's their leader!" Michele bellowed, his eyes were now on me, blazing like black fire. "He would murder you without a second thought! It's their nature!"

I kept my ground, staring boldly back at him, struggling with all of my might to keep my anger in check.

"I do not care. I don't care what you say-it's my life. The last time I checked you weren't my guardian." I turned my back to him as I started up the stairs. "And there is nothing you can do about it."

Michele was silent for a long moment. I was at the door, my hand around the handle, ready to open it, when I heard his voice crawl across the space between us, reaching my ears.

"We'll see."

I whirled, my resolve at last broken. I froze in surprise, my eyes darting across the street and in the trees. Where Michele had been standing, was now vacant. His bike rested right were he had left it-but Michele himself was gone.

I frowned. I started down the steps when a new sound reached my ears. It cut through the night like a knife, and was all too familiar. The sound that had rang out like a death call the night my parents had died.

Some where in the distance, a wolf howled.
