Darcy lay awake in the unfamiliar room Carrie allocated to him. It was directly opposite hers and at the other end of the house to Charlies.
He had anticipated his alarm by a half hour this morning, the sky outside was still dark and would remains that way for at least another hour. But Darcy, Charlie and Dr Bingley would be well on their way to ‘the washer’ by the time the sun appeared over the horizon. Darcy had never surfed there but he’d heard both Bingleys’ literally go stupid over the break.
“Mad left handers,” Charlie would croon.
That boy fell in love with almost everything he did, saw or met. Darcy shook his head. Charlie seemed to find it easy to be comfortable in any situation, he was different to anyone Darcy knew and the polar opposite of himself, but his best mate was the closest thing to family he knew.
Trying to avoid any further thought of family he closed his eyes, determined to catch at least ten minutes more sleep.
That’s when she appeared again, like she had last night, behind his closed lids.
Her smile, the way her eyes sparkled under the fairy lights, her rawness, her innocent, girl next door prettiness. She had no idea who he was when they met and she didn’t go all gaga over him the way most girls did in his presence. she even seemed unimpressed with him.
Olivia Bennet had somehow stuck in his head like the dessert to his shirt.
He didn’t realise she was there, haunting his mind until Carrie began berating the girl as she scrubbed his mousse stained shirt in the kitchen sink last night. He…the person who so openly dismissed Olivia now felt an overwhelming compulsion to protect her against Carrie’s viciousness.
It wasn’t a conscious decision the words just came out but to admit Olivia had a pretty face to a girl like Carrie was like a red flag to a bull and he regretted it immediately and questioned his own sanity.
He was right to refuse a dance with her, but he couldn’t shake the look of devastation his comments had caused, his words where uncalled for but he needed her to know she wasn't in his league...nut then she smiled, challenged him with a look of pure distain he’d never seen from a girl before and it almost floored him.
She was no victim, she simply picked herself up, dusted off the hurt and…he smirked, she actually delighted in his later humiliation, so much so she refused to hide her enjoyment. She got her own back.
Darcy’s alarm sounded, he welcomed the distraction of real time even if it was before sunrise, it was time to get to get his head back in the game. Time to surf.
Olivia woke to the sound of the phone…it was her phone. It was Jane’s ring tone. Disoriented she sat up looking for her mobile.
It was in her bag, the one she took to the party last night and left down stairs with her shoes…She looked over at Jane’s bed, wondering why she was calling. But it was made, Jane was not there!
“What the hell? where could Jane be at this time of the morning?"
What time was it anyway, She checked the bedside alarm clock’s digital display, it read 11:00am, she had slept in.
Throwing her legs over the edge of the bed, she groaned. Her whole body ached from dancing the entire night at Charlotte’s Mum’s party.
She stretched her arms over her head and listened to the approaching footsteps, trying to guess which of her younger sisters it was… she waited the knock at her bedroom door. It was Katie.
