Olivia sat in the dark corridor to the right side of her father's den door. Jane sat close to her right side, backs against the wall, heads cocked in an effort to hear his conversation.
Dr Bingley called as he said he would to discuss the Twins. Olivia could only make out bit parts of the conversation, but her father laughed out loud numerous times and she knew without having to delve any further that he was making light of the subject. He joked constantly that the twins were the boys he never had. She heard him say it to Dr Bingley and cringed.
Turning to Jane, Olivia shook her head in disbelief and whispered "Did you hear that? He's making light of the situation again. He thinks the Twins are funny."
Jane pressed her lips together a look of disappointment mirrored Olivia's feelings.
Shaking her head Olivia recalled the earlier part of this evening when their mother arrived home, Liddy went straight into victim mode, racing Katie down the stairs to showoff the scratches and bruises inflicted, she failed to tell their mother they where made in self defence. As per usual Liddy made such a loud, teary scene, there was no chance for either Olivia or Jane to explain the truth.
Unable to cope after a bad day at work their mother sent them all away with the flick of her hand, telling them she had a headache and couldn't deal with it tonight. She ordered Katie to get some pain relief for her and to apologise to her sister.
Before Olivia had the chance to protest the injustice, her mother lifted up a hand, halting her mid sentence,
"I told you Olivia I have heard enough. I will not have you dobbing. I can see the extent of the damage, I can see exactly what has happened and frankly I am ashamed of you and Jane for not being there to stop it. You have both been told to wait for your sisters after school."
"But Mum...."
"OLIVIA! Please...I need to rest this head."
Olivia tried again but her mother ignored and spoke over her attempt. "Janey will you get the dinner tonight honey while I take a nap. There is fettucini in the cupboard, ham and cream in the fridge, rustle up some of your famous cabonara for all of us please. "
Olivia wanted to slap the smug look off Liddy's face so badly, it hurt. Seeing Katie sitting on the sofa with her head down, afraid to meet her twin's eye, the poor kid, she didn't deserve to be so down trodden and bullied in her own home.
It took Olivia at lease half hour with Katie to comfort her, offering words of encouragement until she smiled again. Then watched as her efforts all unravelled when Liddy approached with a sickly sweet invitation to join her in their room.
"We need to finish our homework Katie, let's do it together hey?"
Katie eagerly agreed, Olivia could see the desperate need in her young sister to have the whole thing behind them and the friendship with her twin restored. A glutton for punishment, Olivia thought and wonder at the bond between twins. Katie seemed to feel it more than Liddy ever did.
As they disappeared up the stairs Liddy told Katie she had to do the Math work for both of them because she needed to paint her nails just like Lea Fosters nails.
"I hardly think that's fair Liddy?" Olivia called after them
"No body asked you, go help Jane in the kitchen." Liddy barked back.
Now in the silence of the corridor, lost in a world of disbelief, Olivia was too late to noticed Jane's distress before she stood hurriedly in preparation of fleeing and it was too late for Olivia to avoid getting sprung for the third time today. Liddy had rounded the corner into the corridor and cried out.
