The Knight of Chivalry

Chapter 17

The captain told Simon to stay inside that morning because of what happened last night, he groaned at this order but accepted it so as to not give the rest of the guys away. It was very boring to stay shut inside all that day but he dealt with it by cleaning the house and the practicing his fighting form in an open space. The rest of the group returned at dusk and they all had reports from the castle which the captain listened to.

            “We are getting closer to our goal just a bit more and this castle will be ready to fall, engineers from your observations of the main gate do you think we can do anything with that?” The captain asked.

            “We can do something with it but we would be caught right away, it’s too heavily guarded” Brook replied.

            “All right we shall leave it for now and carry on focusing on demoralisation the castle. To do this I think we have a few more captains to kill in the south of the castle which I want Simon, longshot and the Sir Arthur to handle. I and my men will be handling some livestock in the north of the castle. Knights and engineers I want you in the inner keep burning down one of the soldier’s barracks and making it look like an accident” the captain said and everyone nodded at this and split up. Simon, long shot and the silent knight headed to the south of the castle and stopped at a tavern where they got a couple mugs of ale and then sat a table.

            “What are we doing here don’t we have a task to do?” Simon asked

            “And we are doing it, captain Kunthar often visits this tavern for ale, food and to grope that bar maid over there, I’ve saw him in here yesterday before I came back to report and from what the locals say of him, he’s here nearly every night” Longshot said.

            “So how are we going to get him?” Simon asked.

            “Bar fights are quite common especially in times like these when tensions are high, we’ll make use of one and take care of him in the chaos and then quietly slip out of here” Longshot said, the silent knight tapped him on the soldier and then pointed at the bar. “That’s our man” longshot said. He was quite a burly bloke with a bushy black beard but a bald head. They waited until he was settled in a chair and had a mug of ale and some food in front of him and then they went into action. Longshot got up and stumbled across the floor and then knocked into one guy spilling his drink.

            “Hey watch where you going” the guy said, longshot took this badly and hit the block who hit him back and saw a bar brawl was going on. In the confusion the silent knight slipped close by to their target and stabbed him in the back with a small knife, he nodded at the other guys that it was done and they left the bar.

            “A small knife wound surely wouldn’t kill him” Simon said.

            “Normally it wouldn’t but Arthurs knife has some poison on it, that guy will be dead in a few minutes by which time we shall be long gone and moving onto the next target” longshot said and so they set off for a different part of the castle. They came to a house that lay quite close to the wall, outside they saw that two guards were standing right by the door.

            “I thought this was going to be trickier since the other captains had been killed last night and word has gone round the castle” longshot said.

            “So how are we going to do this one?” Simon asked.

            “We are going round the back to where I have a clean shot through a window, I’ll hit a oil lamp and this guy likes to read and it will just look like a fire has happened” longshot said, the silent knight gave him a look. “I won’t miss.” So they walked round the house and came to the window which longshot said. He drew his bow from his back and an arrows and sighted up, pulled back and released. The arrow went through the window and a few seconds later the room which the window looked into was engulfed in flame.

            “Alright let’s get out of here we still have one more guys to go” longshot said. They walked away from the burning and moved to another part of the castle and so came to be at another house which again had guards stationed outside it.

            “I don’t suppose this guy also reads?” Simon asked.

            “I’m afraid not, we are going to have to use a different approach” longshot said.

            “So how are we going to do it?” Simon asked.

            “You think you can take care of them guards silently” Longshot replied.

            “Yeah shouldn’t be much of a problem” Simon said.

            “Right then you do that, then go inside, his bedroom is on the second floor and is the first door on the right, he should be asleep, you just stab him and get out of there” longshot said.

            “Got it” Simon replied and he set off towards the guards but in the shadows, when he was fairly close he tossed out a rock which made both them look the opposite way to where he was coming from. He then sprinted across the short gap between himself and them and killed both of them at the same time as he dual wielded his sword and a knife and stabbed them in the throat. He then quietly opened the door to the house a crept in, going carefully across the wooden floorboards to the stairs and going up them slowly to make sure none of them creaked. He got upstairs and found the door that longshot mentioned and carefully opened this. There on the bed in front of him was his target, so he carefully sneaked up to him and then stabbed him in the heart. He got out of there pretty quick and all three of them left and went back to base. They told the captain what had happened and he was pleased with their nights work and told them how the other operations went, he then said that they were going to do one more night of operations and then go and deal with the general, which was going to be a lot harder but he was slowly working on a plan for that and now it was time they got some rest.
