Lexi sat on the porch waiting. She had avoided it, but she was finally packed. She couldn't avoid the inevitable any longer. Already the winds coming across Penobscot Bay had turn chilly. Not yet September first and autumn was in the air. Looking across to the mainland, she could see little tiny patches of color on the trees in the high elevations. She needed to be back in Boston to finish and defend her dissertation, as it had been a marathon, years in the works. When her mother insisted that she go to the island for the entire summer to keep her brother company, she thought it would be a waste of time. Instead she had found it easier to work in the midst of one crazy, hot summer.

She walked onto the lawn and looked towards the sky for that familiar red sea plane. She neither saw any splash of red nor heard the distinctive buzz of the engine. Where was he? She wondered. He knew she needed to go. She couldn't stay, no matter how much she may want to. Her brother, Robbie, came out of the house and said, "Let's get all this down to the dock. Did you even use half of this stuff?" ... except Lexi was sure he hadn't said stuff. Just when her impatience was getting the better of her, she heard that sound... the sound that had excited her at the end of most every day all summer. Then she saw the little red plane, but as it approached and landed, her heart sank. The pilot was a middle aged man, she'd never seen before, but assumed he was Ed, the owner of the air taxi service.

Before she could ask, Ed said, "He had work to do. He warned me about your luggage, but I thought he was kidding. We'll be lucky to get out of the water."

What could she say or do? He wasn't there, so she hugged her brother goodbye and climbed aboard the plane, the sea plane that brought her to the island two months ago...

"Watch those!" Alexis called out as the pilot deposited her luggage on the dock.

"Did you leave anything at home? It's summer... You need shorts, tee shirts, a bathing suit and a sweatshirt for when it gets cold," he responded back.
