Chapter 10

After enjoying their time alone, Steve and Clara made their way back to his truck. The young teacher smiled to herself as she walked after the Commander, but nearly smacked into his back when he stopped abruptly. "Steve? What's wrong?"

He stiffened his back and put his finger on his lips, signaling Clara to be quiet. Stealthily Steve walked to his truck and tuck a gun out of the glove compartment. The young woman stood stock still not wanting to cause a distraction for him.

He looked around pointing the gun in every direction before moving towards the front window of the car. Steve put the gun down and took an envelop from there. Clara blinked before walking over to him.

"What's going on, Steve?" she asked and put her hand on his arm, as the man in front of her leaned against his truck, sighing heavily.

"For the last few weeks I have been getting envelops with things from a tool box my father had. He investigated the death of my mother."

Clara led out a soft gasp and laid her head on his shoulder. "I'm sorry, babe." she said and put a reassuring hand on his shoulder.

Steve slightly turned his head and gave Clara a soft smile. "Don't be, I will get behind all this."

He softly kissed the side of her head and both got in his blue truck. During the drive back to Clara's apartment, both the young teacher and the ex-Seal were silent, with only their hands touching.

The silence was broken by Steve's phone ringing. "Kono, what's up?"

"Hey boss, did you have plans for tonight, Danny is going to be released later on and we wanted to go out."

Clara could see the frown on Steve's face and felt the corners of her mouth move upward. She put her hand on his thigh and nodded her head, giving the Commander a smile.

"Ah, alright Kono, I'll meet you at Tropics." he said and shot Clara an annoyed smile before he hung up on his team mate.

"You are evil."

"That maybe, but he is still your partner." she said and leaned back in her seat.

"And what are we going to say when we show up together?"

"How about the truth?"

Steve sighed and shifted in his seat. "But I wanted you to myself tonight. Just you and I."

Clara had to laugh as she saw him sitting there, with a pout on his lips. "And you'll have me, after the dinner with Danny."

"I'll get you later, babe." he said as he stopped his truck in front of Clara's complex.

The teacher nodded and kissed his cheek, before she went inside.

Steve looked after her, before leaving for his own house. He didn't mind spending time with his team, but he wanted to be alone with Clara.

Clara got ready and dressed in a sleeveless embroidered dress top and black dress pants, then turning to the shoes, opting for strappy wedge sandals. She knew it was just a casual dinner, but Clara wanted to look good for Steve.

Walking to her bathroom she put on some light make-up and let her hair dry in its natural wave. She had felt Steve playing with it when they had been laying on the shore in their cave.

Smiling softly as she thought about it, their cave. Walking out of the room she went towards her kitchen and grabbed her phone. Clara dialed Steve's phone.

"Hey babe." the Commander answered on the second ring.

"Aww, that's sweet, I can't get enough of hearing that."
