Chapter one
I walked out of the movies with my best friend Austin. "I don't think it was as good as the first one."
"You're right but it was still good." I took another handful of popcorn before throwing it out. I looked down at my ticket stub for 'Superman Returns' "Well we need to get home before my mom calls the cops."
"So, what are the parents doing for your big day."
"Having a small party, and when I mean small, mean the parents, me and my ass of a brother." I sighed.
"Well, suck it up." Austin smacked my back. "Superman could handle it."
I smiled at him. "Yeah but he has super powers."
"Hey fag, Mom sent me to get you." Adam my brother yelled at me from his red chevy. "So get your ass over here."
I looked back at Austin. "And I'm going to need a lot more then super powers to deal with him." I said as I walked away from Austin. "See you later."
When I got to Adam's truck I heard that he was blasting his music, well if you could call that music. "Are you done kissing your boyfriend?"I opened the door to the truck and climbed in making sure to hit my foot off of his football helmet. Adam glared at me. "You know you're lucky that it's your birthday and Mom told me to be nice to her baby boy."
I rolled my eyes at him. "Shut up."
"Oh, he turns sixteen and gets a back bone."
I sighed and looked out the window at the broken down town that I live in. Everywhere you looked there was a broken down building, a closed shop or a homeless guy sitting on the sidewalk. I then looked up into the sky and sighed. "Not even Superman would save this place."
"Did you say something fag?"
"Not to you asshole."
"That's it.". Adam reached over and pushed my shoulder so that my head hit off of the window. "Not so though now, huh?" He pulled into our driveway which held Mom car, Dad's work truck and now Adam's broken down piece of crap. "Aw look Mommy went out of her way for her baby."
I looked around the yard to see balloon and happy birthday sign's. "Oh god." I picked the bridge of my nose as I got out of the truck.
"There he is." My mom ran out of the house. "There's the birthday boy."
She ran up to me and gave me a hug. "You're acting like you haven't seen me in years." I tried to laugh.
"I'm just so proud of you. You've grown to be such a well mannered, and handsome man."
"Only in the eyes of his mommy." Adam called over the truck.
My mom shot him a glare before turning towards me. "Let's go inside, dinner is almost finished."
I sighed but followed her anyway. My mom has always been over protective of me because of the fact that I had almost died when I was born. She had me about three month early and the doctors told her that they didn't think I would live to see the age of five let alone sixteen. "Ah look who's home." My father said as I opened the door. He got up from his chair and walked over to me and shook my hand. "Happy birthday son."
"Thanks" I shook his hand.
My father on the other hand isn't as protective, he just doesn't know how to deal with a boy that can't try out for the football team, and that doesn't like sitting there and watching sports all night. "Well since all my boy's are home let's head over to the table and I'll bring the dinner out."
"Sounds good." Dad patted me on the back.
"Hey Dad." Adam just had to but in. "Guess what, Coach wants to put me on first string."
"That's amazing." He put his arm around Adam and pulled him in a head lock towards the table.
"Boys stop playing around you're going to break something." My mom yelled at them as she brought in the plate of pierogies . "Felix I made you're favorite."
"Wow Mom." I acted surprised seeing that she always make the favorite of whoever's birthday it is. Dinner was the same as it always was, Dad and Adam talking about football practice and other sport related things, while mom tired to talk about school and work, and me eating in almost complete silence.
"Alright boys it's time for the birthday cake." My walked into the room with a cake in hands. "Happy birthday to you." She started to sing as Dad got up and turn off the lights. "Happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Felix, happy birthday too you."
"Make a wish and blow out the candles."
"Make a wish mom, his sixteen not six." Adam sighed.
I looked from Adam to my dad to my mom and sighed. I wish that I could be someone that Adam couldn't make fun of anymore, that Dad could be proud of, that Mom wouldn't baby anymore. You know what I wish I was Superman. I took s deep breath before blowing out the candles.
Be careful what you wish for
A whisper seemed to echo through me. "Alright, let's cut the.."
Just then a house started to shake, like we were having an earthquake. "What's going on?" My mom gasped as she grabbed on my dad. A huge bang echoed through the hair and a red blast shown through each of the windows, and the house stopped shaking.
"Holy crap." Adam shot up from his chair and ran to the window. "Something is on fire."
My dad let go of my mom and walked over to the windows. "I'm going to check what happened. You boys stay here with your mom."
"Dad, come on I wanna check it out too. What if you need help."
"Alright, grab you're jacket."
Adam looked back at me as if to say that he one before running over to couch, grabbing his jacket and headed out the door with Dad.
I walked over to the window and watched Dad and Adam walk towards the fire. "Some sixteenth birthday huh sweetie."
"Yeah, some sixteenth birthday."
