I sighed as I packed my car. It had been about six years since monsters had reached the surface, and my family became a host for their settlement. We had opened the old colony compound to them since we hadn’t used it since I was 14, though after I turned 18 I had lived there until I was 24. I had lived there for a long time, but a forest fire forced me out about a month before monsters emerged and I had stayed in the city. I hadn’t gotten around to going back until now for business. The monsters had all left to get on with their own lives and I was headed back to check on an observatory not far from the place. It belonged to my family, and as the current head of the family, it was my jurisdiction. I wanted to get the place fixed up. So I was going to stay at the compound again. Maybe I’ll start the aviary I had always planned. It was a long drive, around 12 days. As was custom, I had sent a message to the compound in case anyone was there doing maintenance or something that the owner was coming. I got into the car, and started the long trip.
