"Come with me, stay the night."
You say the words but,
Boy, it don't feel right.
What do you expect me to say?
(You know it's just too little too late)
You take my hand and
You say you've changed.
But, boy, you know
your begging don't fool me.
Because to you it's just a game.
(You know it's just too little too late)

"I don't think that's a good idea, John." You manage into the phone finally, working your bottom lip as his Scottish accent comes through on the other end of the line under the ID of "unknown number." That's how it always was. And sometimes you didn't even know where he was calling from.

"Come on, baby girl, I haven't seen ya' in so long! I want to see you." His voice is gruff on the other end of the line, making you shiver. You could almost feel his breath on your neck.

"Listen, John. I really don't think this is a good idea anymore. We are just living way to different lives. And I can't keep waiting around on a man who isn't even with me." You manage to find the words not getting stuck in your throat. There's so much you want to say and you can't figure it all out over the phone with his tempting words in your ears. But, you also know that you would lose this fight if he was here in front of you. You'd want to touch him, feel him on your skin.

So let me on down
'Cause time has made me strong
I'm starting to move on
I'm gonna say this now
Your chance has come and gone
And you know,

"Come on, (Name)." He says again. Your brow furrows. The two of you aren't even dating. You are just a damn booty call to him. And that's all it was. Or at least, that's what it has always felt like to you. You're surprised that he even called you. You haven't heard from him in over a year.

"John, seriously. I'm done with this shit. I haven't heard from you in over a year and all of the sudden you call me back up and tell me that you're back in the states and you want to call me up for a fucking booty call!?"

"Baby girl, it ain't like that. I love you." You laugh loudly into the phone.

"Oh-ho-ho. No, John. Don't even say those words to me. It's too damn late for you to say it."

It's just too little too late
A little too wrong and I can't wait
But you know all the right things to say
You know it's just too little too late
You say you dream of my face
But you don't like me, you just like the chase
To be real, it doesn't matter anyway
You know it's just too little too late

"You want to know what kept me going all those days that I was on deployments? You." Somehow he always knew what to say to tug at your heart strings but you knew it wasn't true.

"You're a liar." It made your blood boil to know that he was treating this like a game. He always enjoyed a good foreplay with you. He liked chasing you down and having you come over eventually.

Yeah, it's just too little too late.

"I saud no John."

I was young and in love.
I gave you everything,
But it wasn't enough.
And now you wanna communicate.
(You know it's just too little too late)

"You can't just call me up out of the blue and expect me to come running to you. It's too late for that and I'm not doing it anymore." You angrily hang up.

Go find someone else.
In letting you go, I'm loving myself.
You got a problem.
But don't come asking me for help.

It made you feel to actually get to tell him off. It was something he needed to hear from you and you were sick of being a game. You want areal relationshipm

'Cause you know,
It's just too little too late.
A little too wrong and I can't wait.
But you know all the right things to say.
You know it's just too little too late.
You say you dream of my face.
But you don't like me,
you just like the chase.
To be real, it doesn't matter anyway.
You know it's just too little too late.

You ignored the phone every time it rang over the next few days, packing your boxes for your move to a different city. You hadn't told him because you knew he'd talk you out of it.

I can love with all of my heart, baby.
I know I have so much to give.
With a player like you,
I don't have a prayer.
That's no way to live, no.
No, it's just too little too late.
Yeah, yeah!

You load the last of your boxes into your vehicle, leaving behind the pictures of you and John for him. He was on his way to your apartment to get the last of his stuff. He's be in for a surprise when he realized you were gone. You told him to just unlock the door and go in. That you wouldn't be home right away.

It's just too little too late.
A little too wrong and I can't wait.
But you know all the right things to say.
You know it's just too little too late.
You say you dream of my face
But you don't like me,
You just like the chase.
To be real, it doesn't matter anyway.
You know it's just too little too late.
You know it's just too little too late.
I can't wait, no, no, no, ooh.

John runs into your apartment building, breathing hard as he fumbled with his keys to unlock the door. Cursing as he drops the keys on the ground. He snatches them up, excited to be able to see you finally. He pushes the door open, flicking on the lights to see the now empty apartment. He walks farther in, the door wide open as he stares.

"(Name)?" He calls out repeatedly but no one answers his calls.

It's just too little too late.
A little too wrong and I can't wait.
But you know all the right things to say.
You know it's just too little too late.
You say you dream of my face.
But you don't like me,
You just like the chase.
To be real, it doesn't matter anyway.

Sighing, you relax into your seat, having watched him run into your building. You pull away from the curb, ignoring the sting of sorrow you feel for what you had just done to him but smile as you drive off towards your new life.
