Hey! Thanks for reading! Tell me in the comments if you'd rather Gus be famous, or just Gus. Gimme a vote💙

"No, just... Chase, just brush your teeth please. Chase, come on." I grabbed his toothpaste and pushed the hair out of my eyes. "Turn off the faucet." He muttered something inaudible because of the toothbrush in his mouth.

Sixteen was the year my mom had been looking forward to for years. She didn't have to drive my brother and I to school anymore. Her idea was to hand that job over to me. Chase... he was the sweetest. He had short blonde hair and big brown eyes. Poor kid always carried his heart on his sleeve.

I on the other hand, couldn't be more insensitive. God, I didn't give a fuck anymore. My freshman year in high school really changed me, I just didn't know it yet. I lost some friends, and gained some. The truth was, I didn't care. I was fine with myself, but didn't really try to figure out who I was. It didn't bother me.

"Mazie?" Chase asked from the backseat. "How different is middle school from elementary school?" I winced at his question and stopped at red light. "Uh... it's different. You have more than one class. But it'll be good. You'll meet more people." He smiled, but definitely looked skeptical. I looked down at my lap. I just hoped middle school would be better for him than it was for me.

I dropped him off in the carline and waved as he walked up the steps. Chase turned to give me one last glance before I pulled away. I watched him mouth "Bye Maze." Good luck, kid. You'll need it.

High school. That's a whole other story. I parked my car in the student section and hid my aux cord in the center console. You can never be too careful. I flipped down the visor to give myself a final once-over and grabbed the ID that hung from my rearview mirror.

"Fuck," I thought to myself. "My schedule." I patted my jean pockets. "Whatever," I thought, grabbing my phone from my back pocket. "Took a picture anyway." I studied the small graph. Biology, Geography, Spanish, English, Math. "Fuck, why do I have to have Biology first?"

"Room 284," I repeated to myself. Passing the cafeteria, I tried to remember what period I had lunch. "Third... I think?" I pushed some hair behind my ear and continued on the search for my first period. I passed my a group of boys who's eyes seemed to follow me. Being the asshole that I was, I winked at a boy wearing a black tank top. He had tattoos. A lot of tattoos. I mentally cringed as I watched him bite his lip and wink back.

But instead of flipping him off, I flashed a flirty smile and kept walking. Only after I found my class, did I realize it was an honors class, and these were all seventeen and eighteen-year-olds. "Fucking hell," I cursed to myself. I sighed and sat in an empty seat near the back of the room.

"Mazie!" I heard someone whisper. "Mazie, come over here!" Looking up, I saw Steph, a friend from last year. She was sweet, slightly annoying, but a decent person to talk to. I grabbed my bag and moved next to her across the classroom. "I missed you!" she exclaimed rather loudly. "Hi! It's been forever!" I turned to face her. "You look great!"

I heard someone clear their throat loudly from the front of the classroom. "Welcome, everyone, welcome. I'm Mr. Henslee." He was a tall man with short, dark brown hair and an intimidating stare. "Today'll just be an introduction to my class." He pointed to things around the classroom and made us guess what they were. "What are we, four?"

Throughout the class, Steph whispered stupid shit to me. "Oh my gosh, look at his tie! He said he has a wife. How can she stand him?! I heard he gives us fifty vocab words a week!" Eventually, Mr. Henslee straightened his tie and asked for Steph's name.
