chapter 9; "We're partners, princess."

L O G A N

Calum. Katie. Katlum? Calie? Their names are extremely incompatible.

It's been a week since Katie confessed her feelings for Calum to me. I haven't had the chance to talk with her, or to Calum for that matter. It seemed important to know how he felt about her, before letting her get involved with someone such as Hood. He was a decent guy I guess, but he had a temper. Like I mean, he gets mad over a broken pencil.

"Alright class. You're going to be doing the classic, book report." Professor Dun spoke above the loud conversations. Once the word combination 'book report' left her mouth, there was an instant collection of groans leaving most of the students. I smirk to myself; it reminded me of high school. Professor Dun leaned onto one leg and waited for everyone to stop complaining. Once the voices died down, she spoke up again. "And as 'unique' as this is," she placed air quotes around the word unique. "you'll be assigned partners. But, you must present this book report in a very creative way. That means no essays nor power points."

"This is college Professor Dun. Not high school." A random voice bellowed out. Many of the other students agreed with the anonymous fucker. After more thought, I realized the voice sounded incredibly familiar. So I spin around in my chair, to be met with the gaze of none other than Calum-mother fucking-Hood. Instinctively I rolled my eyes in his direction. It seemed as though Calum and I had this unprovoked feud going on. We've done absolutely nothing to each other but a hate for him just came so naturally.

Professor Dun started to laugh to herself. She fixated her gaze upon Hood, ready to tear him down. "And I hope you are aware this is the history of literature, Mr. Hood. So why don't I pair you with someone first." She looked around the room eyeing all her students trying to find a suitable match. All the while, I was hoping she wouldn't pick me. But just like I said previously, luck was never on my side. "Ms. Davis would be perfect. She could teach you a thing or two about respect as well."

And that's when I turned back to face him, receiving the most deathly glare I've seen. But a solid smirk took place upon his lips, causing me to fear for everything in me.

"Alright. She said we have two months to complete this." I explain to Calum as we make our way towards the ugly green lunch table all our friends were seated at. I set my plate down, expecting him to move away. But Calum placed his plate right next to mine. So I sent him a very confused look.

"We're partners, princess." He sweetly replies, causing me to roll my eyes. "By the way, I have a few books picked out already."

I turn to look at him, hoping he was joking. For the two weeks I've known Calum, he doesn't seem to be the kind that has very good taste in literature. I arch my eyebrows, waiting for an explanation. "What are these book, I may ask?"

"Well, we already know a lot of people will do more popular books right? And the most popular ones seem to be Great Expectations, Wuthering Heights, and To Kill A Mockingbird." Calum explained. This did make a lot of sense, seeing as they were the easiest books to find.

"Right. So you were thinking a lesser known book," I add to the topic.

"Yes. And my ideas were... I Await The Devils Coming, Love in a Fallen City, or The Slaves of Solitude." Calum answered, pulling up descriptions of each book on his phone. Needless to say, I was very impressed with his work ethic. From what happened in the classroom, I automatically had the assumption I was going to do all the work. Clearly, and luckily, that's not the case. I place a gentle hand on his bicep and gave him a small smile.

"I'm very impressed Hood."

"Ahem. Forget something?" Another voice spoke up now. Both Calum and I look for the owner of it, and found Kat along with everyone else staring at us. Luke snickered from his spot beside Kat. I could feel my cheeks begin to turn hot and red. My eyes glanced over at Calum and to my surprise he seemed completely unbothered. But I quickly remove my hand from his arm.

"Sorry. We were just discussing our project for Professor Dun." I say, extremely embarrassed everyone thought it was something else. No one replied but instead went back to their previous conversations. I started on eating my burger, that was probably a week old. After one bite, I couldn't finish it. The meat is absolutely disgusting. I look up, admiring the scene around me. I didn't realize the campus is so astonishing. From healthy green grass, to chattering students everywhere.

I glance around the table, seeing how close the others have gotten. And I realize that I didn't talk to anyone much expect for my girls, and Skylar. Ashton is currently trying to balance a spoon on his nose, making Martha laugh uncontrollably. Michael and Luke are arguing over an orange and next to them, Kat and Athena were unusually quiet. I throw a straw paper at them, getting their attention. I arch my eyebrow towards them, earning a 'come here' look from Athena. So I tell Calum I'll be back, and start to follow Kat and Athena.

We walk for a few minutes, passing by multiple people. Soon enough we reach a lone picnic table and we all sit down.

"Alright. Back off." Kat said, snapping her head towards me with the most furious expression I've seen her wear. My eyes go wide, wanting more explanation. "I told you I liked Calum, Lo."

Subconsciouslot I start to let out a laugh. "Kat, we're partners for a graded project. And, you're acting like a middle schooler. Calm down." I try to place a hand on hers, but she pulls it away.

"Just back off and there won't be any problems. Got it?" Her eyes shot daggers straight for me. I place my hands in the air in mock surrender.

"I think he's a douche so don't worry about it. But you do need to calm the fuck down."

"She's right Kat." Athena now chimed in. Katie looked right at her, now glaring towards Athena. Katie rolled her eyes dramatically as she roughly stood up.

"Whatever. I need to go work on a project." And she stormed her little self off. There was now an awaken silence between Athena and I. Luckily though, it didn't last long as we started to burst out laughing.
