Its been a month now and Kevin's shoulder has healed nicely, he still hasn't answered my question about the bullet thing, but that's OK. Today there is a Lion Cats game and today is the day the players meet Kevin, the guy they have all heard about, the guy in the hall of fame pictures. Both Kevin and I will be playing as today the team are short of two players, and as always, Jonas is the teams bat boy.
Kevin, Jonas and I are in the car on the way to the field as it is a home game.
"Remind me again where I'm playing?" He asks.
"I want you as pitcher, and 1st in the line up, so you can get up as many times, this team beat us at the finals last season and they won't leave it alone, they are a very sexist team, because the Cats coach is a woman, we automatically play like one. And I'm thinking we put you up front and show them what we really are all about." I say.
"But Ash, you are fantastic at the game I'm sure they have seen how amazing you are." I stare at the steering. Kevin shifts in his seat. "You have hit in a game right?" He asks.
"She hasn't hit in a game yet. During practice and games against the team she is knocking them out. But she hasn't hit in a game..."
I interrupt Jonas and say.
"I haven't hit in a game since you left, it's like when you left the baseball mojo I had left when you did."Kevin looks down at his hand.
"Well I'm here now so today you can show 'em the real Ashlee Wormwood." Kevin says. He then looks at me with a smile on his face, I glace at him and focus back on the road returning the smile.
An Hour later the crowd has stared to build up as people locally and the team friends and family have come to see baseball. I was changed and in the changing room with the boys, being the coach and the only female on the team is slightly awkward but I guess we all have to deal with it, I have for 7 years.
"Alright, this is the team that beat us last season and because Kevin is here..." The guys gather quite a chatter amongst them. "...Guys quiet please, yes Kevin the guy in the pictures is here, and because this is his first game with his team and meeting you all, and because these guys are sexist pricks I want to show them what we have, OK?" The guys cheer. "And Kevin..." I look around the room. "Where is he?" I ask the guys. The all shrug. I shrug it off as I know he is here, he kinda has to be, he is still my bodyguard at the end of the day. "OK here's the line up..."
After going through the line up with my team we collect in the middle.
"Scott." I look up at him.
"OK team we go out there show 'em what for and have fun. Cats on three. 1...2...3"
"Cats!" We all chant. We all run out to our dug out and I see Kevin sat on a chair in the middle of the dugout staring out onto the field. He looks like he is in his element and I don't want to disturb him.
