As I drew the curtains apart, the morning sunshine filtered through the windows coating everything with a brilliant blaze of golden hue. I tried tidying up the living room, but soon gave up wondering if we could hire a part time maid- making our lives a lot easier. I looked at myself in front of the mirror which was mounted parallel to our family picture wall.
It never seemed as if I was a teenager, for I always looked younger than my age. My mother would say I looked like those porcelain dolls. ‘It’s true’, she used to say at night when she’d brush my hair and would tie it up in one thick plait. With my brown curls which came till my shoulders, my big round eyes filled with curiosity and wonder, my naturally rosy cheeks and my beautifully aligned teeth. Albeit this was from my mother’s point of view of how I looked, never mine. In my point of view I looked like a short girl with too frizzy hair, big button eyes and my big front beaver teeth. It seemed as though I had no resemblance at all to those posh porcelain dolls but never said so, for that was the last thing she had said to me apart from telling me to be strong no matter what situation I was in; I’ve hung to those words ever since.
As I went outside I wondered what she was doing in good old heaven right now but did not let my rollercoaster ride of thoughts go on the wrong coast and started to put all my energy on feeding the chickens their breakfast. Once I was done with my daily chores, I thought I’d start making breakfast and waking up my closest companion, without whom I would not be here today. He was the one who helped me cope with my grief, when my mother died, instead of my father who was too shocked by the sudden death. But then everyone had been as shocked as him. I finally reached the ‘barn’ which was more like a dog house for the size of a huge bulldog, stacked with hay which was now matted to the ground because of all the weight .I walked towards a huge bird species who looked quite peaceful in his little ‘bed’.
He had very sharp features, sharp claws, radiant beak and a hexagon shaped face but his eyes, his eyes were the most peculiar things. Light blue, not blue like the sky but blue like the sparkling deep blue ocean. You could get lost if you stared at him too long. He was as huge as life and I couldn’t help but smile at him as I tried to wake him up but had no success as he just answered with a ‘But I’m sleepy!’ and the occasional groans muffled with tiny snores. I then tried blackmailing him which did the trick. ‘What do you mean I can’t have any food today!’ cried Feathers looking as though he might cry. As I tried to hide a grin I said ‘Come on lazy bones! We need to go to Blueberry Hill’. Feathers was about to open his beak to make up an excuse when I continued, ignoring Feathers ‘For my special recipe you know the one? I’m sure you haven’t forgotten’. Feathers who couldn’t believe that I was breaking the morning rule which wasn’t even a rule; it was just made up so that feathers would move once in a while flapped his big wings in joy.
Once we had had breakfast and Feathers was happily snoring on the lush green grass outside; I started putting the washed plates back in their cupboards when I heard something beep. It was my WNC phone with full battery .I only had a few contacts and my friends WNC’s were disconnected; it could only have been one person to text me and that person was away for work. This was what was written:
Dearest Lily, I need your and Feathers’ help. As I was travelling south east on my quest to find a formula for cancer and the other fatal viral and bacterial diseases, I went undercover because of the tribe people in a place known as Fantamasia for I took 20 bundles of their kawoozle fruit, three jugs of their guava juice and sadly cut three of their blabla trees for testing as well as for eating; The place is in Lost Treasure Island which is quite a journey. Your first task is to find the map-maker once you find him the rest will be a piece of cake. Love, Dad....
I went outside, my lips sealed and showed Feathers the message and not caring if he had seen it or not, rushed inside to get a backpack. As I filled the bag with food from apples to yogurt but only putting the light stuff in so that my bag would not get heavy, I came and went in a jiffy. As I came back to Feathers I said ‘Come on lets go’ .Since he could see I was not in the mood to give a proper answer he kneeled to the ground, his front legs curved while his hind legs were fully stretched.
As I climbed onto his back I wondered if my father knew what I was going through and that if my mother hadn’t told me to help the ones I loved when in great need ; If it wasn’t for her then I would have been finishing my favourite author’s best-selling novel by now. I smelled the air filled with the scent of soil, baking bread, and all my memories to find my father. Once I had cooled down I took Feathers out of his suspension by telling him exactly what had happened.... ‘And that’s why we have to find him’ I said while I made myself comfortable. As my mind had once again jumped on the ‘Thought Express’ Feathers interrupted me by saying ‘you know, you don’t have to hold such a grudge. It wasn’t his fault in the first place and he would have done the same for you’. I just sighed wondering what I would do if I hadn’t found Feathers on that rainy cold morning.
Several hours had passed since Feathers and I had set off in the air. I texted my dad on my WNC phone asking about the map-makers whereabouts. ‘Beep’ he replied back instantly. Just as the beep came Feathers said ‘What was that?’ not daring to turn his head. ‘My WNC phone which I got on my birthday. Remember?’ I said making sure that my neck was covered in my woollen scarf properly as the temperature had dropped all of a sudden. ‘It stands for: Wireless Network Connection phone’ I couldn’t help adding the word ‘Dumbo’ but did not dare say it aloud. Before I knew it my eyes were filled with sand and I told Feathers to look for land, too sleepy to do it myself. When we had finally found a place to sleep our tummies rumbled as loud as the crackling of thunder but we ignored reassuring each other that we would eat later.
As I settled my back against the bark of a nearby tree I wondered what my father was doing and if he was sleeping or wide awake, maybe thinking about me while staying under cover. I finally cleared my mind; bade my mother goodnight and instead of focusing on tomorrow I thought of lush green meadows filled with the laughter of children and the rays of sunshine.
