The gush of wind tickled my spine. It seemed as though we had landed in the middle of a blizzard. My numb fingers reached out for a woollen jacket over the shirt that I had slept in. Just to be on the safe side I zipped the jacket up till my neck, which would hopefully keep me warm against the freezing temperatures and fur boots, so that even if my feet became numb or I sprained an ankle I would look good doing so. I didn’t fret over Feathers for he didn’t mind the cold temperatures because of all the feathers. When I was younger I thought he was part penguin because he would decline my protests of him sleeping inside the garage or shed or even the house sometimes, in the winter time. I would do anything to get Feathers warm in the winters but he would shake his head and would soon tell me to go inside or else I would catch a cold.
As we both made our way down the hill, I spotted smoke coming from a far off distance. Perhaps there was a village or someone living in this frozen wasteland but I doubted it, wondering if anyone could survive the freezing temperature let alone live in them. I noticed something black swarm over our heads. I couldn’t place its shape for it moved freely like a liquid when it touched a surface and looked like gas when in the air. ‘Lily what do you think that was?’ asked a slightly frightened Feathers. I shrugged and replied with an ‘I have no idea’. We stayed silent throughout the rest of the time it took us to find the place with smoke. The wind played with my hair, leaving me to shudder it off and to sink my hands in my jacket’s warm and fuzzy pockets. Soon my teeth began to clatter and Feathers got worried and asked if he could do anything to help. I shook my head not wanting to trouble him but once he had seen my blue face he spread his wing around me in such a way that the cold could not seep through.
I watched as my footprints got washed away by the arrival of heavy snow and hail. We really needed to get to a place which would shelter us from the cold. Feathers said something which could not be heard over the whipping of wind, hail, rain, snow and steel sharp icicles which came in the size of buckets sent down from the sky. I was trudging through the snow which was approximately one foot deep. I whispered something to Feathers not exactly knowing what I had said. Somehow I was on top of Feathers’ back, clutching his skin for dear life. I felt as though I would freeze because the temperatures decreased the closer we got to our destination. Fortunately I survived but stayed on top of Feathers’ back as my feet had lost the ability to stand up on their own. One of those smoke-like creatures suddenly came in front of me its eyes staring right through my soul. I felt my grip on Feathers loosen causing me to fall to the cold yet frozen ground with a thud and soon I remembered no more.
The ground was still cold but the temperature was bearable. I saw myself in a cave with the entrance blocked with plenty of small rocks which as a whole blocked the cold. I tried to lift my head so that I would be able to see better but one of the smoke-like creatures shushed me and told me to pop some leaves into my mouth. I hesitated at first but then agreed when I looked at the friendly eyes of the smoke-like creature. They seemed to radiate a kind of warmth which soothed me and helped me calm down and slowly chew the leaves one by one. I had finally regained the ability to speak so as slowly as I could, I asked the creature what it was. To my surprise it answered my question instead of making conversation through eye contact. ‘Hello child, you may be wondering what we are and why we live in such a cold place.’ I nodded but it did not seem to notice and continued ‘I am the chief of our tribe. My name is Heath and I am here to help you to survive the harsh temperatures which you will encounter through the rest of your journey. Please don’t interrupt. Yes we know about your father who helped us in getting our land back. We generate heat which is one of the reasons of why the cold doesn’t bother us but the heat does. We do not have a definite shape which allows us to possess any shape which pleases us and as you can see, we are made out of smoke. Our kinds are known as Smokies. Since your father had been kind to us we shall return the favour. Now tell me child, what your name is and the oversized rodent’s.’ He had clearly never seen a bird. Feathers suddenly faced Heath and said ‘my name is Feathers and for your information, I’m a bird!’ Heath stayed quiet for a second and then said ‘yes of course how silly of me to forget.’ I rolled my eyes as I watched the drama queens, before they could accuse each other of anything I interrupted and said loud and clear ‘my name is Lily’ so that it would snap them back into their senses and of course to reply to Heath’s question.
The Smokies had given me jackets, scarfs and a woolly hat made out of the finest Polar bear skin while the pants, shoes and gloves were made out of mole-skin. The new clothes helped me bear the harsh weather and the Smokies also gave me another set of clothes for hot weather which could kill a person wearing normal clothes if they stayed in that particular area for too long. Heath explained to me over the next few days that there were different kinds of Smokies: the ones who helped and the ones who were nothing but trouble. I did some research as well and got to know very soon that their smokey, shapeless figures would change colour with their moods. Yellow was for happiness, Blue for sadness, Red for anger, White for forgiveness, Green for peace and Purple for excitement.
I had stayed with the Smokies for quite a while and had no idea how fast the time went by. I would either be with Heath listening to the amazing accomplishments that his tribe and he had made with the help of my father to get his land back or I played with the younger Smokies. Today I was playing hop scotch with one of the girl Smokies whose name was Aurora and her brother Timber. They had taken the shape of real girls and boys which made them able to play and run and what not.
In her human version, Aurora had beautiful red tussles which were in a high ponytail, bangs which were swept to the right side of her forehead and icy blue eyes as blue as the Pacific ocean. She wore a coral shirt with white polka-dots and denim shorts. Most of the clothes she wore had polka dots on them! She had rosy cheeks and a small mouth. Timber had hazelnut hair and a cute button nose which would usually wrinkle in dislike or disgust of some particular thing. Both of them came up till my elbows but I didn’t mind for they preferred to stay in a small heighted figure.
Aurora and Timber were new to the game of hop scotch but got beginners luck more than once which made me look like a fool. They jumped in joy and their skins turned purple, and then they were back to their original smokey form. ‘Yay we won again!’ cheered both Aurora and Timber. I couldn’t feel annoyed at children, not when they had not done anything which annoyed me so I smiled and said ‘hmm... I bet that was just luck. How about we play one last time?’ I asked. They agreed at once and started to draw the boxes and numbers all over again.
It was our last day with the Smokies and as I said goodbye Heath whispered into my ear and said ‘Lily please do us Smokies a favour and give our thanks to your father. We owe our life to him’ I nodded in response and said ‘don’t worry I won’t forget.’ And with that we said our good byes and finally we were in the air ready to go where ever the wind would take us.
