One Year Later...
Mary once again found herself at the window of the old cottage. Frost clung to the edges of the old window pane as she peered through.
A smile touched her lips as she noted some of Florence's things had been returned to the room.
Little porcelain animals watched her back from atop the fireplace, pictures hung back on their rightful hooks.
In front of the fireplace, was a small red headed boy, sat comfy on an old woven rug, a small chocolate labrador lay happily by his side.
Mary gasped as Samuel entered the room carrying a plate of food to the boy, her fingers rose to softly stroke the cold glass.
Lord, how she missed him, her once silent heart beat painfully against her chest.
He may have only been hers for a short time, but she loved him, would love him for a lifetime.
Mary's vision blurred, her throat constricted as Samuel lifted his arm to let the pretty red head from the cafe slip into his embrace.
His free hand slowly traveled down to rest on her swollen belly.
No matter how her heart broke, no matter how she longed to run to him, Mary knew she could not. She was the intruder here, he was never meant for her, this is how it should have been all along.
Her eyes were once more drawn to the small boy sat by the fire, he really was the vision of her brother Jerry. She felt no anger towards the women or child, after all she did believe them to be her family and now as she stared through the frosted window she saw that is what they had become, a family.
"Mama, what you doing?" small fingers threaded through her own.
"Not much sweetie, just saying goodbye," Mary looked down at her daughter, they were together and would be forever, thanks to the beautiful man beyond the window, he deserved his happiness.
Turning to leave, knowing she would never return here again, Mary dared one more glance back toward the cottage.
Samuel stood at the door watching her leave.
"I will love you forever," was gently carried to her through the night.
