Angel's POV
We turned onto the street, and Alicia slammed on the breaks. We just sat there for several minutes, staring at the sight in front of us. Ben honked the horn in the car behind us, and we pulled over to the curb in front of Alicia's house, since the curb in front of mine was occupied by three cop cars. The others followed us. Sean came running over to us and I got out of the car. He pulled me into a hug.
"What happened?" I ask, afraid of the answer.
"They found Missa in the house, half-dead from several different wounds." My knees collapse, darkness swims at the edge of my vision. Sean catches me and holds me to him. I start sobbing.
"I'm sorry, but you guys can't be here. We're investigating a crime scene." A young cop says, coming over to us. She can't be much older than Sean.
"This is Angela Felton, she lives here. The little girl is her half-sister." Sean says quickly.
"Wait, what happened?" Ashley asks, having missed it the first time. Alicia, who's also crying, pulls the others away to tell them, not wanting to upset me more. The cop looks me over and I'm suddenly glad to have dyed my hair blonde yesterday; I look more like Missa when I have blonde hair.
"Where is your mother?" The cop asks me.
"At work?" I say, unsure. "Please, tell me what happened."
"A neighbor called us after finding Melissa unconscious and bleeding in her room. She said that she normally watches Melissa in the mornings before she goes to school and that her mother hadn't brought her over or said anything about her staying home. She got worried and used the spare key, which she said you had told her the location of, to get in. She said you'd been out with her daughter for a few days and she hadn't heard from either of you but that she didn't worry because you often disappeared during the summer months. Can you verify any of this?"
"I told her and Alicia where the spare key was three years ago when I had it made. I also gave one to Alicia to keep. That way they could get in if anything happened. Me and Alicia have been staying in a hotel room for a few nights with some friends of ours." I have to pause several times because I'm crying. "Please, is she going to be alright?" I sob.
"We're not sure. The last report said they'd stabilized her but she was still unresponsive." Another cop, a guy this time, says coming over.
"She's autistic." Sean says. "She's usually unresponsive."
"I mean, she's not waking up." The guy says. He's in his late thirties.
"Can I see her?" I ask hopefully. I need to see my baby.
"We'll need to take you for questioning first." The first cop says sympathetically. "If your story checks out you can most definitely go see her." I nod. Alicia comes back and takes my hand.
"I'm coming too." She says sternly. Both cops just nod and usher us into a car.
After several hours of questioning, they finally decide I'm telling the truth, and say I can go to the hospital. By the time they finish I'm literally pulling my hair out in frustration. Shouldn't my reaction to finding out what happened be enough to convince them that I could never, let alone would ever, hurt Missa. I doubt that even Sean was a good enough actor to make the pain I'm feeling look real. I'm escorted to the lobby, and see my mother being escorted to the interrogation room I just left.
"That's her! That's the bitch that hurt my daughter!" She screams when she sees me. I freeze.
"What are you talking about?" I ask.
