The insistent blare of my alarm startled me awake, and I groggily slammed my hand down on it to silence the disruptive noise. Rubbing the sleep from my eyes, I reluctantly pulled myself out of bed and went through the motions of getting dressed for the day ahead. Hastily grabbing my backpack, I trudged downstairs to the comforting smell of breakfast being prepared in the kitchen by my mother.
"Good morning, Mom," I greeted with a wide yawn, my voice still heavy with sleep.
"Good morning, beautiful," she replied, her cheerful tone a stark contrast to my grogginess. I couldn't help but chuckle as I moved to the breakfast table, where a plate of bacon and hash browns awaited me. Knowing the importance of time, I ate quickly, not wanting to risk being late once again. Finishing my meal in record time, I rinsed my plate and gave my mom a quick kiss on the cheek before heading out the door.
"Have a great day, and no trouble, okay?" she said, a hint of worry in her voice as she waved me off.
"Don't worry, Mom, everything will be fine," I reassured her with a smile, though inside, I couldn't shake off the strange events of yesterday. Pushing those thoughts aside, I stepped outside, the cool morning air awakening my senses.
As I made my way towards school, thoughts of assuming my ghost form crossed my mind, but a lingering memory made me hesitate. Instead, I opted for a more conventional walk to school, the streets slowly coming to life as people started their day.
The boredom of Civics class was a stark contrast to the morning's events. Mr. Poe's monotonous voice seemed to drone on endlessly until he interrupted himself with an announcement.
"Hello class, we have a new student joining us today. Her name is Asha, and she just moved here from Quebec," he announced, a hint of enthusiasm in his voice.
Asha entered the room, her presence vibrant with long hair tied back in a colorful array of orange and pink hues. Her green eyes sparkled with curiosity as she scanned the unfamiliar faces, dressed in an outfit that matched her lively personality.
She waved to everyone before settling into the seat behind me. In the back, Ali and Michael were engrossed in their usual banter. I turned around, offering Asha a friendly smile in an attempt to break the ice.
"What's up, new girl?" I said, trying to sound nonchalant.
Surprised, she looked up from her bag, her eyes widening momentarily before a friendly smile graced her lips. "Oh, hi, I'm Asha!" she exclaimed, extending her hand in greeting.
I extended my hand and clasped hers in a firm shake, a friendly gesture to welcome the new addition to our class. "So... Quebec, can you speak any French?" I inquired, curious about her background.
"Oui! Ça va?" she responded in fluent French, her accent carrying a hint of Quebecois charm. I couldn't help but chuckle at her confident reply.
"Ça va bien et toi?" I replied, matching her linguistic prowess with a smile. Her face lit up with excitement at the smooth exchange of pleasantries.
"Ça va bien! Quel est ton nom?" she continued in French, her enthusiasm infectious. I laughed and responded in kind.
"Mon nom est Snow!" I replied, enjoying the camaraderie that was quickly forming between us. Her eyes widened with genuine excitement at the revelation.
"Wow! You're really good at French," she exclaimed happily, her admiration evident in her tone. I couldn't help but laugh at the compliment.
"Honestly, that's really the only thing I know," I admitted with a playful grin, causing her to join in the laughter. Our shared amusement bridged the gap of being new acquaintances, fostering a sense of camaraderie.
