Josh's POV
I paced back and forth in the dimly lit confines of the abandoned hospital, my heart pounding with anxiety as I awaited Nash's return. The silence was shattered by a distant howl, followed swiftly by a sharp scream that pierced the air. "That sounded like Nash," I exclaimed, my voice echoing faintly off the cracked walls.
"Josh, he's going to be okay," Skylar reassured me, though her own apprehension was palpable. Suddenly, a shimmering purple ring materialized against the backdrop of decay, and through it emerged Alex, Michael, and Brandon, each carrying Nash's unconscious wolf form. They hurriedly laid him out on a makeshift table, his fur matted with blood that mirrored the stains on their clothes.
"What happened to him?" Anita's voice trembled with fear, her eyes wide as she took in the scene before her. Brandon wasted no time, his hands already moving to treat Nash's wounds as he explained, "He was attacked by a ghostly wolf, accompanied by Jason. Nash fought back, but his attacks passed right through the wolf's ethereal form." The mention of Jason's name cast a chilling shadow over the room, a sense of dread settling over us all.
A second howl echoed ominously from outside, causing the hairs on the back of my neck to stand on end. "Guys, we have company!" Asha's urgent voice broke through the tension, her eyes wide with alarm as she pointed towards the figure of a man in a tattered gray coat. Alex wasted no time in confronting the intruder, his voice commanding, "Get out of here!" Surrounding the man were several wolves, their eyes gleaming in the dim light. Instinctively, I remained in my wolf form, a low growl rumbling deep in my throat as I prepared to defend my pack.
"I see you have a wolf of your own," the man remarked casually, revealing himself to be Jason with a chilling smirk. "Back off," I snarled, my voice laced with hostility as I locked eyes with him, my instincts on high alert. Jason chuckled darkly, a cruel amusement dancing in his eyes as he remarked, "Ah, that makes more sense. He's a shapeshifter." Before I could retort, Brandon's urgent voice cut through the tense standoff.
"Um... guys?! Something's happening to Nash!" Brandon's voice trembled with nervousness. I turned around, and Nash's body began to emit a soft, eerie glow, his form becoming translucent like a ghost. Fur sprouted from his skin, his body contorting until he transformed into a spectral wolf. A flash of blue light dazzled us momentarily, forcing us to shield our eyes. When we looked back, Nash stood before us as a ghostly wolf.
He glared at us with anger in his eyes. "Nash? What happened to you?" Ali's voice trembled with concern.
Jason's laughter cut through the tense atmosphere. "He's no longer your friend. Nash is now a ghost wolf under my control," he declared triumphantly.
Before anyone could react, Nash lunged at me, but my attempt to grab him passed right through his ethereal form. "Why can he touch Josh but Josh can't touch him?" Skylar's voice shook with confusion.
"Some things are better left unsaid," Jason replied cryptically. Brandon charged at Jason, but one of his wolves intercepted, attacking him before he could strike. "I'm surprised you idiots haven't figured out who I am yet," Jason taunted mockingly.
In a quick move to evade Nash, I shifted into a snake and slithered away, returning to my human form. "We know who you are, Jason!" I shouted angrily.
He grimaced at our knowledge. "How are you working for the CIA then?" Anita asked in shock.
"I struck a deal with them. Help them find more like me, and they'll spare me," Jason explained defiantly. Tension thickened in the air as we prepared for confrontation.
"You traitor!" Brandon snapped, his voice laced with fury.
"Hey! There's no vaccine to cure our dirty needs. For now, you must build up our machine," Jason declared with a chilling smirk. He flicked his fingers, and the wolves surged forward, their snarls blending with the chaos of the attack. Reacting swiftly, I shifted back into my wolf form, teeth bared, and lunged at the closest wolves. I managed to take down a few before Nash intervened, pulling me away with urgency. Frustration gnawed at me as I struggled against the onslaught.
