Sans couldn't break his eyes from staring at him the entire time. The family was out getting dinner and talking casually about what was going on. Nobody really noticed on how quiet Sans was being, they were either too busy with the conversation or the food on their plate. Sans barely heard what Undyne was speaking about as he glanced across the restaurant to a booth that held an alone skeleton. He was almost rough looking but yet soft somehow in his features. He sat in the seat only typing on his phone, not even having a plate of food or even something to drink. Sans couldn't help but watch the skeleton in curiosity, but with also a feeling he couldn't describe. He didn't want to be at this table, he wanted to be over there with him. He seemed so alone, he just felt that it was right for him to be there with him.
"Hey lover boy, you still staring at that guy over there?" Undyne said, breaking Sans' thoughts completely.
He turned to Undyne, trying to be angry but mostly just finding himself flustered. He had thought that nobody cared, everyone, didn't notice... right?
"You should just go over there, Sans. He is a rather nice looking young man." Toriel continued for Undyne, her eyes having an almost playful look.
Sans only found himself more flustered, shaking his head roughly at the idea.
"What are you guys talking about?" He asked, trying to pretend innocence.
However, pretending to be innocent was more of Papyrus' deal, and nobody believed him.
"Hah! The dorks blushing." Undyne smiled brightly, wrapping an arm around Alphys next to her.
By now Sans was more embarrassed that the guy was probably hearing all of this since he was only across the room from them. This was not going as he thought it would. Where had all of his confidence gone? Wasn't he just saying before that he wished he was over there? Why was he so nervous all of the sudden. Sans felt a tap on his shoulder that made him turn to the seat next to him. Frisk sat in the chair, satisfied that they got his attention.
'Why don't you just ask the waiter to get his number?' They signed to him, knowing full well of his sudden fright.
Sans blinked at the idea before smiling. Yeah, that sounded better. He would do that instead! Sans nodded to the child, who smiled brightly. They turned back to their plate that only had fries left, taking more to bite into. Sans turned to look back at the skeleton to see that he hadn't moved an inch and was still staring at his phone. It was probably going to be a second before the waiter came over to check up on them. Sans gave a small sigh and looked down at where his own plate would've probably been. He hadn't gotten anything as he wasn't even hungry in the first place. He just ate the appetizers and was happy. He wasn't really paying attention anyway, he wouldn't have gotten anywhere with his food.
"Are all of you still good?" A voice asked, making Sans look up.
It was the waiter. He stood there, his glasses keeping his black hair out of his eyes just barely. Despite his voice, he was honestly pretty small.
"No we're-" Toriel started to say before Sans quickly cut her off.
"Actually I wanted to ask you something," Sans said, trying to not sound as awkward and nervous as he felt inside.
The waiter looked a little surprised before smiling at him and nodding.
"Alright what would that be then sir?" The waiter asked politely.
"That guy's phone number." He stated plainly, pointing straight at the guy he had been staring at this entire time.
The waiter seemed a little surprised at first before a smile came across his face.
"I'll go see if I can get that." He said simply before starting to walk away.
Sans felt a lot of emotions as he watched the waiter walk over to the table that held the lone skeleton. He felt nervous and scared but he mostly felt an excitement rise in him. What if he actually gave him his number? What if that would actually happen. Although once the waiter started to walk back empty handed he got worried. He had said no, hadn't he? Oh god, he wasn't prepared for this.
"He said that he would rather have you there in person." The waiter told Sans once he was close enough.
Sans blinked and sat there stupidly for a few seconds. Then he felt that dread that was in his soul start to creep away. He got up from his seat, trying to ignore the smirk Undyne was pointing at him and started to walk. As he got closer he noticed that he wasn't on his phone anymore. Instead, he was spinning a mustard bottle under his hand. Sans approached meekly, before taking a hesitant seat across from the other. He was even better up close, Sans realized.
"H-Hi," Sans said before cursing his stutter under his breath.
The other only seemed amused at the action though, not disgusted or even confused.
"Heya, the names Red." He said with a smile, watching Sans with very amused eye lights.
"Hi Red. Oh uh, my name is Sans. I uh... I just saw you sitting alone and I really thought you were cute and-" Sans stopped himself right there, instead just staring at the skeleton before him.
He would've blushed even more if he only knew how blue his face had gotten. Red gave a chuckle at the other, not a single drop of malice in the laugh.
"Honestly I think you're being the cute one here. You're so nervous, it's okay." Red said gently, giving a soft smile that almost seemed to not match his rather intimidating looks.
Sans gave a breathy laugh at that, instead of looking at Red he turned his head down to breath and rub sweat onto his shorts from his hands. God, how had he just unraveled his confidence so fast?
"Sorry, I just... didn't realize I'd be this nervous." Sans laughed. "I guess you can say that I failed to mustard up my courage."
Red blinked before laughing at his pun. By now he had put his mustard to the side but the pun was well appreciated anyway.
"Well, why not ketchup with that courage and just talk," Red asked, throwing a pun back.
Sans' eyes lit up at the pun. This man was perfect. This was it. He needed this guy.
"I relish that statement." Sans smiled, feeling himself loosen up.
"Hm, are you sure about that sugar?" Red punned back, making Sans blush slightly.
"You really know how to pepper somebody up." Sans tried, which Red only snorted to.
Sans laughed too, realizing just how much of a stretch that pun really was.
"That was awful!" Red laughed wholeheartedly.
Sans laughed too, nodding with his statement.
"Yeah, it was." Sans laughed.
