It was like any other day in the underground. Monsters were walking around, some laughing, some conversating, some walking alone. It wasn't usually this active in Waterfall, but it was truth flower season. The truth flowers only bloomed once a year, and there was always just enough for one for each monster. The flower cannot lie, and always says the truth. You say a sentence, then the opposite of that, and pull a petal off for each one. The sentence that landed on the very last petal was the truth, and would happen or has already happened. A lot of monsters participated in the event of taking their truth flower. It was a tradition that has been around for as long as monsters were put underground. One monster, however, was never really a fan of the event. Sans found it to be useless. He already knows what happened in the past, at least a lot more than others will ever know, and because of the resets he knows the future. What was the point of getting his truth flower? He was still there, however, as Papyrus usually dragged him there every season.
"Brother, I have gotten a flower!" Papyrus cheered, making his way to Sans.
He held the pure white flower in his gloved hands. It almost seemed to glow to show just how powerful it really was. Sans looked at the flower with an uninterested look before smiling at his brother.
"Oh yeah? Can I ask ya what you're going to ask it?" Sans questioned, leaning back on his heels.
Sans already knew what he was going to ask. In many timelines before Papyrus told him what it was. By the look in Papyrus' eyes though, he could guess that this is one of those times where he wouldn't say.
"I will not say," Papyrus stated like he usually did.
Sans looked away from him as soon as he said that. Guess he wasn't going to-
"I won't say until you get your flower, Sans!" Papyrus said aloud making Sans' head turn sharply to him.
He had never bargained for something like that before. Sans looked at Papyrus and was contemplating on just saying 'forget about it'. Although he noticed something in his eyes, something that told him that he really should just grab a truth flower. Sans sighed and started to walk over to where the patch of flowers was. There weren't that many left as they were quite late to the event. Sans looked around at the white flowers, almost feeling intimidated. He wasn't scared of some flower was he? Who cares that it probably knows everything more than any person in the world could ever know. He had been near worse things in his life. With a slow pace, he leaned down to one of the truth flowers. It looked up at him, almost as if daring him or welcoming him with open arms that are so tempting to just get hugged by. He grabbed the stem and broke it off from the ground gently, almost as if he would think it would be cruel to do anything other than that. After getting up from his kneeling position, he turned to Papyrus. He tried to ignore the proud look he held and instead walked over to stand by him once more.
"Alright, I got mine," Sans stated blandly.
Papyrus smiled down at his brother with a fondness he couldn't describe. He was going to get Sans interested again, this had to be something to help!
"Alright brother, I shall tell you what I will be asking," Papyrus exclaimed while still holding the flower in his hands. "I was going to ask the truth flower if I will be joining the royal guard any time soon."
Sans tried not to grimace, as he already knew the answer to that. Undyne was never going to let that happen. Even if she did plan on it, he would make sure to really tell Undyne how he felt about it. Although keeping his facade, he only smiled and nodded.
"I think that's a good question to ask," Sans told his brother, trying to be as genuine sounding as he could.
Papyrus smiled and patted his brother on the head.
"I can only hope that yours will be the same," Papyrus said softly, before taking his hand back to his side.
Sans only looked at his brother with a slightly weird look. His brother was being oddly not... well self-centered right now. It almost felt like he was doing it unpurpose.
"Sadly, however, I am going to go back home, Sans. While waterfall is very pretty and I love being with you, I have a meeting with Undyne in an hour. I have to be prepared."
Sans blinked a few times before smiling at him. He had forgotten all about that while thinking of his brother's weird actions. Papyrus gave a wave to Sans as he started his treck home. Sans made sure to return the gesture to his brother before he turned away. Sans was left by himself with the truth flower. He looked down at it, wondering what he was going to ask. He didn't want to waste a perfectly fine truth flower, as that was just a horrible deed in itself. He couldn't give it to another monster either as they would probably be curious about why he didn't want it, or why he picked it in the first place if he didn't want it. Sans only sighed and looked at its soft white petals. What was something that he really wondered... What was something he didn't know that he wanted to know desperately? Before he knew it, he knew what to ask, and was already steadying his hand at one of the petals.
"Resets will stop eventually." He said softly, as he picked the petal.
"Resets will never stop."
Another picked petal.
"Resets will stop eventually."
A petal fell to the ground below where his feet were.
"Resets will never stop."
Another petal glided softly to join the other on the floor.
"Resets will stop eventually..."
Sans paused after saying the sentence as he saw that he was at the last petal.
(So I was inspired by the whole 'he loves me, he loves me not' thing that people do with flowers. I hope you enjoyed this. :3 bai.)
