Tyler's POV
She stared down at her phone and suddenly she became more introverted than she already was. Whoever it was that had just messaged her clearly wasn't someone she wanted to hear from.
The class quickly came to an end and I decided it was now or never to make friends. She seemed nice and I knew that I couldn't manage in this town alone. As our professor said we were free to go I grabbed my backpack and swung it over one shoulder. I let her walk down the steps first and followed behind her.
As we got outside in the morning sunlight I looked over at her. She already seemed to try to act her way out of being sad and put a fake smile on. I wasn't sure if the fake smile was for me or for herself. Maybe she had to convince herself she was okay. And if that was the case, then maybe I will help her try to actually be okay.
"So, I know I am very entertaining and my notes are great. Quite frankly I am a great note passer. But I am new around here and I could kind of use a friend. And seeing as my options are low, I think you would be a great candidate." I said looking at her with a cheeky smile trying to make her laugh.
She giggled quietly to herself as she looked around at everyone that surrounded us.
"Your friend options are low? There are thousands of people who go here." She said while she laughed.
"Very true," I replied quickly. "But there is only one you."
She smiled shyly at my remark.
"Only one me?" She asked in a tone that dripped insecurity.
"Yeah, I mean I don't know if you've looked around here, but there are not too many people around here that are actually willing to just talk to some random new guy in their classes. These are all just a bunch of local kids who know their way around and already have friends." I said.
"Where are you from anyways? When did you move here?" She asked kindly.
"I'm from California, just moved here about a month ago." I replied back
"California?!" She said with an excited smile. "That's where I'm from! I just moved here a couple of years ago."
"Wow so someone who actually knows what it's like to not grow up in the south," I said while laughing.
"Yeah I actually know what it is like to grow up in big cities that are way too crowded but to also go to the beach whenever you wanted. It was the best and worst all at once."
"I know I honestly miss it already, all my friends live there so it's kind of lonely here," I said in a normal tone but internally sad that I always felt alone. I spoke up again before she could reply.
"Hey, do you have more classes right now?"
"No!" She replied fast as she smiled back at me.
"Well, this could be kind of forward coming from a guy you barely know but could we go get some food or something? Maybe show me some places around town? I mean I could always do that by myself but if I get lost and stumble my way through town I think I'm going to have to blame Lauren from history." I joked as she laughed while still walking right beside me.
"You know as funny as it would be to hear about you getting lost in town, I suppose I can't actually let you go wondering around alone can I?"
I bite my lip while smiling. I shrugged my shoulders slightly.
"Sooooo you'll go?" I asked happily.
"I'm in."
"Aye! Let's go. I'll even buy because I am a true gentleman and if we're gonna be friends I have to start setting the friendship standard right now."
Lauren's POV
I could use any distraction at this point. I felt like I was using him for my own gain. But he was new and I wanted to be like new. So if using Tyler is what I have to do to distract myself from Gabriel, then that's what I will do.
I've been used many times before, so for once I'd like to be the user.
