I looked in the mirror for a brief second, pale washed out skin and dark under eyes looked back at me. I took out my makeup and focused on one part of my face at time covering up the flaws I hated the most. I looked down at my left arm that was holding my eyeliner. I focused on the scars lining up my arm, I didn't know when I would ever get used to them.
I put on my uncomfortable white button up uniform, I've always hated this thing.
I've worked as security for college dorms for about a year now. With it being winter there hasn't been much going on but over the summer was when I saw all the dark and unspeakable things no one else wants to see.
Mostly it would be nights of drunk kids coming home, and throwing up. It wasn't the best job but for the most part it was quiet.
I got into my car and started driving, the rain lightly fell on the windshield. I walked into the building to find my coworker John sleeping with his head on the desk.
"John" I said. He looked up quickly and wiped his moth with his sleeve
"Oh, sorry Rose I didn't mean to fall asleep." His eyes were red and dark underneath. It looks like he hasn't slept in days.
"It's alright, new baby keeping you up?" I asked.
"Oh yeah, he's definitely a handful. Can't get him to go down at night while his mother is working at the hospital. I would rather her stay home but we really need the money." I felt bad him and his wife were such good people. She always wanted a child, so did he but they were never financially ready not even now with his new job here.
"I'm sorry John, you should probably get going so she's not late for work. If you ever need a babysitter just let me know. I wouldn't mind helping them out.
"I really appreciate that Rose, I'll let Julie know. Have a good night." He quickly got his stuff together and headed for the door.
I looked at the security cameras to find no movement
"Surprising." I said to myself.
The night was slow I sat twisting and turning my chair. It was around 3 am when I heard it. My heart jumped out of my chest and I brought myself to my feet. A loud scream came from a girls voice and not just any scream a stomach curdling one. A scream you made when you saw your worst nightmare. It was so loud, it was close, everyone must have herd it.
I ran as fast as I could outside, I looked around to find anything that would point me in the direction of the girl. A van on the left side of the building sped away. I got in my car and started driving as fast as I could. I dialed 911 as soon as I had a decent sight on the van.
"9-1-1 What's your emergency?" The dispatcher sounded like a young woman.
"Yes, This is Rose from the Endicott dorm rooms I have a possible kidnapping going south on Nile street in a Grey-Blue van going about 60mph. I'm not close enough to get a license plate number." I spoke fast but clear.
My forehead was sweating and my hands gripped the steering wheel. I drove as fast as I could to catch up to the van, it took a hard right onto a side street. I slowed down and took the same right, or at least I thought I did. I stopped. The van was gone, it was a dead straight street where could they go? I looked in every driveway at every piece of open land and nothing. No tire marks into the woods, not a single sound or light, just dark and silent.
