Chapter 3••• everyone takes a seat and one by one kids leave the room to be evaluated. Soon after all the kids are tested, the tellers come out and announce each child's position to the whole city, assembled in the room. My chest heaves up and down as I try and fail to calm myself. My knee bounces up and down with my racing heart and I start to sweat. My hair is up in a messy bun now, to get it off my neck. I force myself to pay attention when the next attendant comes in the room announcing the next teens to go.
"Peter Calvin, Amanda Ridges, Kate O'Danold, Scarlett-Lane Henderson, Joshua Mendes, and Alexandra Ford."
I rise from my seat to go down the steps when I spot Lucy give me a thumbs up. I enter the line that was waiting for me and we arrange ourselves in the order we were called in. We exit through the side door down a hall where we pass the kids who have just gone. We don't find out our results until everyone is finished, and I'm the second to last group. The attendant stops us in front of a row of doors. We step forward to the one with our name written on it with dry erase markers. I open the door, embracing my soon to be life. My eyes meet the teller I have, and a breath draws in and out again. Not my sister, like I was hoping, but another girl.
"Hi, I'm Ruby. Your teller. Please take a seat."
I walk around a table with a bunch of syringes on it. "Don't worry. Those are for people who get a little," she pauses searching for the words to say, but they never come. "Just relax. You don't feel anything. Just drink this. It makes you go unconscious until I'm done searching your dreams. It's all be ok."
I down the contents in one sip, and close my eyes, surrounded by only blackness...
The next time I swim back into consciousness, is when Ruby shakes me. "I'm finished." I try to read her face, but she has a good neutral one, not allowing any hints of my reading to peak through. I get up and walk out the door. After the other called kids come out we are led back into the assembly room, while passing the last group. My eyes float between my mom and Lucy. I walk up the steps and decide to sit next to my mom. I won't be living with her anymore. We wait for 15 minutes before the last group comes out with the attendant following.
"Sorry to keep everyone waiting. Let's get straight to it. Paula Cloud- Nurse," the room fills with applause and a girl, Paula I guess, runs up and relocates herself in the nurse section. Michael Hale- Professor." The attendant goes down the list of names. "Lucy Maine- caretaker." Lucy smiles a big grin and walks over to her appointed section. No tellers have been called. We still have two groups to go though. My group is announced next. Peter, Amanda, Kate. I'm next. "Scarlett-Lane D'Antonio-" my chest collapses in, and my eyes edge with black. I stop breathing when she says my result. I blink tears out of my eyes. I can't believe what I just heard.
