“Why would she do this?!” Mat growled, hitting the steering wheel with his fists. He had said that about fifty times. I just sipped on my sweet tea he was kind enough to get me. I hadn’t spoken a word since we left. I was in too much shock. I couldn’t believe it.

We pulled into my driveway, and I saw my little sister playing in the yard. My mom was sitting on the porch, e-reader in her hand. I groaned. I had hoped that she had left Sarah with the babysitter and went shopping or something…

But now. She had to stay home today… She’s been out every other day this week!! She just had to choose today to stay home. Why can’t she just go to work?! Oh yeah. She’s on a ‘holiday’. Who the fudge takes a holiday in the middle of April?!

“Lily!” She exclaimed as I got out of the car. I winced. All of this crying and junk had given me a migraine. “Decide to come home early for your birthday?”

Oh yeah… It’s my birthday today. I’m seventeen as of this morning.

I put on a fake smile. “Yeah, Matt here surprised me and took me home early.” I directed my gaze towards him, signaling with my eyes for him to play along, He quickly took the hint, and his face lit up, showing no signs of the anger I had seen just two minutes ago.

My mom smiled, completely oblivious. “That was very sweet of you Matt.” She said, sounding proud. She had liked Matt since the day I brought him home. The fact that he was a huge flatterer and complimented my mother every chance he got helped a LOT.

Suddenly, I felt my legs being squeezed. I looked down and smiled. Sarah had given me a hug. Well, a hug of what she could reach anyway. I picked her up and gave her a real hug, and I felt her tiny arms wrap around my neck. I kissed her on the cheek and she giggled.

“Happy birfday Lily.” She smiled. I ruffled her strawberry blonde hair and pouted, trying not to laugh.

“Where’s my present?” I said in an overly-sad voice.

“In the house.” She nodded, looking very serious, staring at me with her wide, hazel-green eyes. She knew something was up. She’s always been able to pick up on when I was acting… Smart kid…

“Oh really know?” I asked, grinning and poking her in the stomach. She giggled.

“Yeah!! Come one! I wrapped it alllllll by myself!!” Sarah smiled widely, looking very proud of herself. She wiggled out of my arms and ran up to the porch. When she realized I wasn’t following, she turned around and placed a hand on her hip, waving at us with the other. “Come on!! We don’t have all day you know!!”

Matt grinned at me and took my hand gingerly, still a little afraid that I would pass out at any time. I smiled at him, showing that I would be okay. He nodded and started walking up to the house, me right beside him. Sarah was tapping an impatient foot, a very sassy look on her face. I couldn’t help but laugh.

“She’s adorable.” Matt said, grinning from ear to ear. “She looks exactly like her sister.”
