Trevor and I would later share a room but, until he turns seventeen, unfortunately, it's just me. I set my stuff down on the top bunk and then went into the common area to begin making breakfast for everyone. One of the downsides to being a gatherer is working weird hours. I have to be up at four a.m for training but I still have to help around and then go out looking for other children and teens who are on the streets. I saw that one of our youngest, Blake, who is only five was already awake. I quickly picked up the tiny brown-haired child, trying to calm him to keep him from running around the large and dangerous kitchen. There were too many knives, flammable things and other such objects in the kitchen for a small child such as him, to be running around. When Blake was settled, I turned to the fridge which currently holds most of the food besides this morning's gatherings. I grabbed the eggs and set the carton on the marbled countertop. I began to fry the eggs, fifty in total. Five pans three eggs at a time for roughly forty-five minutes. By the time I had finished kids were waking up and soon Trevor would be up as well. I knew soon I would need to go get more kids. I saw a young teen this morning, she seemed interesting. I knew that I would need to get her/him, I don't know with the teens on the streets. Ash emerged and pulled me aside,
"Zane you need to go with Aiden today go change and get ready to go" she whispered to me before continuing.
"Charlette is sick and I am one of few people here that is trained as a medical physician and I want to be here with her." she finished saying. And I nodded as I walked away.
Now I must admit, Aiden is not the best at fitting in with the real world. I can't say I'm great but, I can hold a conversation and dress like someone above would. Don't get me wrong me and Aiden get along and he's cool, just not always the best with real-world operations. We needed to head to the pipes soon it would be noon, which is when we prefer to go into the city as everyone is in a rush and that makes it easier for us to fit in. First things first though I need to talk to Trevor. According to my watch, it's 10:50 I need to meet Aiden at 11:15 to get to the pipes by 11:40.
When I reach Trevor's dorm room his door creaks open I can see his short blond hair roughed over his face and one eye, he must have just got up.
"Hey, Trev, what's up," I say trying to be enthusiastic.
"Not much, I'm tired. Without you, in here I slept through my morning alarm." He responded the tiredness obvious in his voice. After a long pause, Trevor started to pace. It's odd for him to pace but, he's probably just sitting out a train of thought. He then began speaking,
"It's weird, being alone in here. I am so used to falling asleep talking to you. I know that soon I will start heavily training but, it still seems so lonely" he almost pouted.
"I know, but soon enough we'll be in the same room again," I assured him
"Anyway I've gotta go," I said turning to leave and flashing him a quick smile.
By the time I'm at the exit of the main bunker Aiden has been waiting for a few minutes, however, he seems to of for once dressed in a way that will allow us to fit in. As we exit the bunker I send a quick message to Ash saying we had left.
As Aiden and I walked through the dark and slim tunnels, this time with an equally as familiar but different stench. This time it was more so like spoiled milk mixed with almost the smell of gasoline. It's weird, even though I'll be above ground quite often the grass is one thing that I always will miss, it always seems so new. Even now just comparing it to this morning, it's so new to me purely because Trying to not bump into either each other or the walls, I notice it is getting darker fast! I knew this could only mean two things it's raining or someone has found this exit. I tapped Aiden's shoulder which alarmed him to the light change. I approached the exit with Aiden still behind me, I luckily hear the loud plops of rain hitting the sewer exit. I motioned for Aiden to follow me up the ladder. I grasped the cold metal bars climbing up out of the sewer. I quickly ran to the sidewalk Aiden just behind me and just before noon-ish.
