‘Stars can’t shine without darkness’ ~Unknown.
Unable to make out the body’s identity, I gingerly crept closer to it. I could tell it was definitely a male with a strong build. I knelt down on my knees, closely inspecting the victim but never touching them, as I remembered that you shouldn’t touch the evidence nor mess with the crime scene.
You could just about make out the black hair, even though it was drenched with blood. They also had a straight nose and small plumb lips and extremely long eye lashes. From the tip of the nose to halfway through the right cheek lay a terrifying scar. On his neck, the man wore a silver necklace with the letter ‘A’.
That’s when I realised. Adam, my elder brother was lying on the floor with blood leaking from every limb. With no time to spare, I shot up and leapt for the telephone. I dialled in ‘999’ and requested for an ambulance. In a matter of 3 minutes, the ambulance was parked outside our house. I jumped to answer the ambulance-men and quickly explained to them how I found my brother lying on the floor. They had to stop his blood from leaking any further and quickly dashed him to the hospital. I came with them, carrying my phone and house keys.
Once we had arrived at the hospital, many doctors were surrounding Adam as they took him to a room called ‘Resus’ (which a doctor had explained was like an operating room, in which they dealt with life-threatening situations). I wasn’t allowed in this room so I had to wait in the ‘family-room’. Around twenty minutes into my waiting, a police inspector came in to question me.
“Hello ma’am, I am Inspector Goole. What is your name?” he looked to be thirty, with a very nerve-wrecking aura about him.
“Danielle Parker” I gave him a tight smile.
“Well Miss Parker, how do you come about to know Mr Adam Parker?” he eyes roamed over my features as though he could know my auto-biography from just doing so.
“If you’d had paid attention to our surnames, you would’ve realised that it’s the same. Adam is my brother. How does this information help you inspector?” I glared at him.
“Good enough. I have heard that you were the one to have found Mr Parker, how did you find him?” He was Irish! I just realised that he said ‘found’ in a really strange way.
“You still never answered my question. How do you expect me to answer if you don’t answer my questions in return?” I narrowed my eyes accusingly at him.
"That is because I do the questioning around here, not vice versa." He hissed at me, his voice dangerously low.
It felt like years by the time he finally let me free of his rude questions. A nurse came by to see me and she led me to my brother's ward. My brother was lying on his back with bandages wrapped his head like a turban and there were tubes on his chest that connected to some machines. He looked so lifeless, it scared me. I crept closer towards him. It was amusing how peaceful and innocent he looked. I had never seen him look so vulnerable. He was always my brother. The big, bad wolf, who had no feelings.
"I'm really sorry, no need to worry he will make it out alive" She looked at me with pity in her eyes.
"Why do you have to be sorry? It wasn’t your fault." I smiled at her.
"How do you feel about this?" She asked, now sitting beside me. I didn’t feel anything. I felt blank. What was I even supposed to feel?
"Nothing….?" It came out more like a question.
The nurse asked if I wanted her to call anyone. I smiled politely and waved her question off. It was only about nine p.m when I remembered Justine. I quickly got my phone out and called her. I vaguely informed her about the day’s incident. It turned out that she was at some 'friend's' house. I glanced one last time at my brother's lifeless body before I headed out the front door to leave.
I only had five quid left for the remaining of this week, which is approximately six days. I had to spend my money wisely as I have to feed my sister and buy us the necessities. For this reason, I couldn't take a taxi so I had to walk the way home. I walked in and found my sister in her pyjamas gobbling up a bowl of cornflakes. I wiped the bloody floor of the kitchen and locked all the windows and doors for obvious security reasons. I then went up to bed with my sister wondering how what we were going to do.
Don’t get me wrong, I am used to looking after my sister and staying home alone. It was just that my brother’s condition was so bad, I wondered how long we could survive on five quid.
