When I was a kid, I used to take the train everyday to school as neither of my parents wanted to drive me. The train was a nice experience. Every day I got to see familiar strangers and examined them. There was a couple who went to school together every morning on that train with me. They were wearing casual clothing but had backpacks meaning they were college students. Sometimes they'd sit next to me, sometimes they wouldn't. But I'd always witness how they held hands and giggled like crazy people. There was also a business man who rode it with me every morning too. He often wore a suit and carried around his suitcase. He often looked like he was in a rush and would fiddle nervously with his fingers. Sometimes he'd even call his wife and ask about his children. You see, that's really one of the worst parts of danger zone.. once you have children, it's like you are sealed into the danger zone forever. The danger zone will become your permanent home. I see many people like that on the train. In the danger zone, with no intention of stepping out...
Until eventually, there was a foreign boy around my age who rode it with his mum every morning.
I was only in elementary school at the time, so I have no clear memory of his face, but I do remember his personality. Clingy to his mum and also really loud. In a way, like Wong Yukhei. Sometimes he would sit next to me and watch over my shoulder as I played a game, and then he'd say something in a foreign language to his mother while I desperately hoped he wasn't talking about me. I didn't have any friends, yet, I liked to think of him as that. When I was feeling lonely and sad the most, I'd talk to that foreign boy in my head and he'd understand me everytime.
Of course in actuality, I couldn't say a word to him.
But there was one morning he came without his mum with a smile of triumph on his face. Like he was proud to finally go on the train by himself. I couldn't help secretly giggling at his face to myself. Cute.
But of course, he never knew I had such thoughts.
I watched as the boy dialed someone's number and started to talk excitedly. It must have been his friend. I wondered to myself at the time too, has that boy stepped into anyone's danger zone yet? Maybe not, as he's so young, but what if?
Then, somehow, his phone had fallen on the train tracks. I watched as he panicked and stepped on the train tracks himself trying to pry out his phone from in between the boards. But the train was coming from the distance and he still hadn't pulled his phone out. He was at risk of being run over.
Was I someone who never went beyond the acquaintance zone? Yes.
Was I someone who let a stranger die? Hell no.
So I ran to him when he had miraculously gotten his phone out and forcefully pulled him out of the train tracks myself as soon as the train arrived.
"Be careful! You shouldn't just step on the train tracks like that!" I scolded him even though he probably wouldn't understand. He had a face of shock as he stared at me. "You.. saved my life," he said in barely understandable Korean. But his facial expression said it all.
"SUSHI!" I heard someone yell from behind me. It was that kid's mom. He gulped and then suddenly put a handkerchief on my hand. "My name is Sushi. Once again, thank you for saving me!" he gave me a quick bow before running back to his mom who dragged him away by the ear.
He gave me a handkerchief with a sushi print on it and I haven't gotten rid of it since then. I'm not even sure if his name is actually spelled Sushi. For all I know, it could be a tricky foreigner name.. but since we'll never meet again, he'll just be Sushi whom I saved from dying forever.
