"Your parents are gone, Miss Chappel," said the police officer finalizing Anamarie's suspicions. The man, introducing himslef as Charlie Montgomery, sat next to her bed in a chair; his hat in his lap.
"We know you could do nothing to stop two grown individuals, let alone your parents. However, Anamarie you could help us now. Do you know where they may be heading?"
She didn't know what to say. How should she answer him? She couldn't just rat her own parents out...could she? When she didn't give an answer, the doctor in the room clapped his hands together. "Come on fellas. Give her some room for now."
"Get some rest," Mr. Montgomery said with a comforting hand on Anamarie's shoulder. She watched them leave and suddenly felt an on slot of tears. She couldn't stop them. Why? Why had they abandoned her! The doctor patiently waited for Anamarie to calm down again. He came over to take the police man's chair. He handed her some tissues.
Anamarie gladly took them. "Anamarie, I know this is a lot of hard things to take in," the doctor began, "but I can see a strong young woman inside you. You'll know what to do next time.
"Just take it easy for now, okay? Me, or the other nurses, will check up on you in a few hours. You are not alone."
She wasn't alone? She liked the doctor's kind eyes. Anamarie nodded and after he lefted she looked out the dark window.
The distant city lights was like star gazing into the night sky. It comforted her. According to the police man, Anamarie's parents had lost control of the car when a semi suddenly changed lanes. The car collided with a gaurd rail, and flipped twice down a slope. The police were suprised anyone survived at all.
Anamarie took a shaky breath as it all came back to her. She turned towards the T.V., watching Animal Planet until she fell asleep. When she came to next, she saw the clear blue sky out her window. She felt sore and her bones ached all over. She groaned when she adjusted her body.
"Good morning," came a short, stalky nurse stepping in. "We were waiting for to wake up before grabbing your breakfast. Would you like it now?"
Anamarie opened her mouth to say something but it came out more raspy than she meant. "Yes, please."
The nurse simply smiled and waddled off to fetch that morning's food. Anamarie wondered what there would be to eat? She looked out the glass doors to see a small family standing by the nurses station. A small boy in a cast stood next to his father and mother. They appeared to be thanking the nurses with smiles. The boy was more than loved by his parents, that much was obvious. Anamarie felt jealous of the boy, but instantly regretted it. There was nothing to be jealous of. Her parents would come for her...they had to.
She watched as the family went around the corner out of sight. She turned her attention to the T.V. that still played above her bed.
Her parent's would come. She knew they hated public places like this, especially with police out looking for them, but they loved her. They would come as soon as they heard. For now, Anamarie took comfort in that one thought alone.
