The nighttime has a way of getting you to admit your secrets as if the darkness could hide them forever. Police shouldn't shine lights on the people they are questioning, I thought. They should just bring them out on a night like this. Maybe that's why I agreed to meet him here. I want to know everything about him. Which was crazy. Maybe I was crazy.
The moon was the brightest I had ever seen it, washing everything in silver. The ocean was crashing and chaotic and freezing. So, of course, I was standing in it.
With each wave I nearly toppled, the water soaking all the way up to my thighs and chilling my bones. "Hey," someone said next to me. A shiver ran down my spine, and it wasn't from the cold. "Hey," I replied softly, barely audible over the waves. Turning towards him, I could already hear my heart pounding and my face flushing. I hoped he thought it was from the cold. His pants were already soaked and his hair was wild. The moonlight bleached away his color, making him look like a classic black and white movie. My heart stuttered when he smiled at me, all lopsided and goofy looking. I turned back to the ocean. I couldn't do this. Why was I doing this? My hands were shaking, but not from the cold. "Hey," he said again, concerned now, grasping at my arm. "You're freezing! We should go dry off." He was clutching my hand now in both of his, an attempt to warm me. It didn't warm my hand, but it did manage to set my insides ablaze. He looked up, his eyes shining in the dim light, and I couldn't stop myself. I had never been very good with words. I always managed to get the simplest of phrases jumbled and incoherent. So instead, I acted. Before I even realised what I was doing, I was kissing him. His lips were soft on mine and tasted of salt. And for once in my life, I wasn't worrying. I was living.
