The sound of water was very faint, but Russetfire felt the river lap at his pelt. His vision was blurry. He smelled of tangy, old blood.
The red tom tried to stand up, but his legs wouldn't let him. He tried to call for help, but his throat was sore and dry.
Russetfire closed his eyes again. This is where it ends.

"Russetfire," someone called. It was so faint Russetfire was sure he imagined it. The voice repeated itself over and over again, growing more frantic with each call. Something jabbed him in the stomach and a pain struck him, but he knew it should've hurt more than that.
The voices seemed clearer now. "Russetfire, wake up!"
Was he imagining things again?
"Russetfire!"
Russetfire barely opened his eyes. Ferretpaw was watching in terror. "What happened? Russetfire, please wake up!" his voice was on the edge of sobs.
Russetfire grunted, and everything froze.

Ferretpaw rolled him out of the river bank and examined him closely.
A few moments later, he was being lifted up for a few moments, and set back down.
Cold water splashed onto his body, but he didn't flinch. He knew in his head, StarClan was near.
"Russetfire, are you there?" Ferretpaw asked, his paws trembling.
"I'm here," he rasped. His throat felt as dry as a rock.
"Listen to me," Ferretpaw meowed. He gripped his paws on his body.
"You're going to be okay."

"He can't remember anything," Ferretpaw told Splinterstar and Hollowbreeze beside him.
"And you said he was just by the riverbank, on the verge of death?" Hollowbreeze seemed skeptical.
"That's correct."
Splinterstar scratched his ears. "Ferretpaw, are you sure-."
"I'm positive!" he yowled, "If Russetfire could speak for himself, I'm sure he'd say the same thing, too!"
The toms exchanged glances. Hollowbreeze reached out and placed his tail on the medicine cat's shoulder.
"We'll wait until he's fully conscious. After that, we'll see him he can tell us anything then."
As much as Ferretpaw hated the fact that the two most trusting cats in the Clan didn't believe him, he agreed. He glanced back down sat Russetfire's body. The slow movement of his flank rising didn't make him feel any better.
Once the two cats have left, Ferretpaw went to replace Russetfire's cobweb bandages.
Russetfire twitched. Ferretpaw slowly unraveled the straps from his shoulder when Russetfire placed his paw on his. His tail curled between his legs.
"Hollowbreeze," he whispered.
