Chapter 4
(Red's pov)
"Hails, come here and look at this," I held out my phone to the girl sitting across the room from me. She turned to me and gave me a confused look before she unfolded her legs from underneath her and walked over to me. She grabbed my phone out of my hands and looked at the instagram post.
"Looks like your girl has another man," she said.
"Way to sugarcoat, buddy," I snapped.
"Well there's nothing to sugarcoat, she went to coffee with Scotty."
By this point I was starting to get mad. Not mad at Hailey. Not mad at Rowan. Not even mad at Scotty. I was mad at myself for blowing my chance with a girl by not taking up the opportunity when I had it. Now any hopes that I'd had about being with her were down the drain.
"I don't get you, Red," Hailey said.
"What does that even mean?" I shot back with attitude.
"You're so chill about everything. You never get nervous, you don't get mad very often. But then you met Rowan and it's like someone flipped a switch. She does weird things to you," she said as she turned and looked at me. I leaned my head back in frustration and groaned.
"This morning when you said I had it bad for her, you were right. I have it worse than I'd like to admit. She makes me question everything I do. It's weird because I don't even know her and she has this effect on me," I stopped talking briefly, Hailey looked as if she was about to say something, but I spoke anyways, stopping her words before they left her mouth.
"Oh well. Clearly I don't have a shot, I'll just get over it," I ran my hand through my hair and then changed the subject.
"Do you think there's any Chipotles around here? I'm starving," Hailey sensed that I didn't want to talk about Rowan anymore, so letting the subject drop, she answered the latter question.
"I'm sure we can find something before the halfpipe," she said as she grabbed her Team USA coat, tossed me mine, and headed towards the door. I shut the door behind us and walked towards the elevator. I hit the down arrow and waited for the doors to open. As they did, I saw a short, brown-haired, green eyed girl standing next to a tall, brown-haired, green eyed snowboarder. He was looking down at her, she was looking up at him. The two looked incredibly happy with the other's presence. I felt my heart shatter a little at the look of them. They noticed Hailey and I standing there, so Scotty placed his hand on the small of Rowan's back and they walked out of the elevator. As they stepped past us they greeted us with smiles.
"Sup, little Red?" Scotty asked pleasantly.
"Not much, Scotty," I said with a slight nod towards my friend. "Hey Ro," I said to the beautiful girl standing beside him. She responded with a shy, yet disappointed looking smile.
"Hi Red," she said, then she looked at Hailey and grinned at her too.Why did she look disappointed? Maybe I was just reading too far into this? Forgetting about her was going to be harder than I thought it would.
The two walked back towards their rooms and Hailey and I walked onto the elevator. Trying my best to forget about the awkward situation that had just taken place, I pulled out my phone to find somewhere where I could get a good burrito.
(Rowan's POV)
I looked up at Scotty's thousand watt smile. I'd been with him for an hour or so, roaming from the coffee shop and just wandering around the area talking for him. If my only goal had been to get my mind off of Red and Hailey, it was more than accomplished. Scotty was charming, funny, and just an all around great guy to talk to.
"Shit I'd better get back and get ready to catch the bus to the slopes. Wouldn't want to miss my Olympic event, now would I?" he said as he looked at his watch. I felt my face turn into a slight frown, but put a smile back onto my face before he noticed.
"Okay, we can head back. I have to get my camera stuff together and head over to the slopes soon anyways," I said.
"You're gonna be there?!" Scotty said, suddenly looking like a kid on Christmas morning.
"Well yeah... I am a snowboarding photographer, you know," I replied sarcastically.
"Alright, little miss sass. Just make sure you get some good ones of me," he said with a wink.
"Oh no, no, no. That wasn't sass. That was sarcasm," I turned to him and jokingly waived my finger in is face.
"I feel like you have to be sassy to be sarcastic, though," he said as he grabbed my finger and wrapped his hand around mine, returning it to his side. Confusedly, I looked up at him.
"Is this okay?" he asked, gesturing to our entwined fingers.
"More than," I responded with a smile. It felt right. I felt happy.I looked up at Scotty and laughed, he looked down at me and did the same. The elevator came to a halt, and the doors opened. Simultaneously, Scotty and I looked out the doors to see Red and Hailey standing at the opening.
Well isn't this just fantastic. So much for forgetting about Red.
Scotty placed his hand on the small of my back and led me out of the elevator. His touch sent a shiver down my spine and made me feel more secure, yet I still felt timid in front of Red.
"Sup, little Red?" Scotty asked as we passed them.
"Not much, Scotty," Red replied, then shifted his smile in my direction. I felt my smile falter a little bit, unsure if he saw it or not.
"Hey, Ro," he said. A nervous feeling erupted in my stomach. Why was I nervous? I felt like I was in the wrong as I stood in front of Red. I'm not in the wrong, I'm only friends with him. There's nothing wrong about hanging out with another guy.
"Hi Red," I quickly and quietly said. I smiled slightly at Hailey before walking back towards my room with Scotty. We stopped in front of my room, my back against the door and Scotty standing in front of me. Neither of us said a word. Before I could process what was happening, he leaned down and kissed me. Not hard, but not a peck. A soft, sweet, caring kiss. He pulled away and looked at my face, which must have looked terrified.
"Oh god, I'm sorry, I shouldn't have done that. I, uh, I guess I'll see you at the halfpipe," He awkwardly sputtered out as he ran a hand through his hair and look to the ground beside him.
"Wait, Scotty," I said as I grabbed his sleeve and turned him back towards me. As soon as he was facing me, I stood up onto my tip toes and kissed him again. He kissed me back for a couple seconds, before both of us pulled away, smiling.
"I liked it..." I said, looking down towards my feet as I softly grabbed his hand.
"I'm glad. Well, uh, I gotta get going. See you after a while," Scotty smiled the whole time he was talking.
"Yeah, see you after a while," I agreed. He turned and walked back down the hallway towards the elevator. I watched him until he got on the lift and then walked back into my room. I shut the door behind me, leaned against it, and sighed. What was I thinking?
