The quinjet landed, and out came the four heroes. Captain America being the first, followed by Hawkeye, and Black Widow.
The Raven made sure to come out last as a form of being polite; Of course, no one would ever acknowledge this. The Captain looked to the sky as a primal rumble was heard; And above them, shadows cast across the sky. Out of the portal, came a floating...thing bigger than a football field.
...Chitauri? Edith was baffled. She'd studied the species briefly as a child, but could only remember a few key things. The four watched, all except Edith out of their element. Chitauri soldiers sprung from the massive creature, clinging to the sides of buildings, and sliding down. Some crashed into the buildings, shooting energy rays from their guns at innocent bystanders.
"Stark, are you seeing this?" said Steve.
Inside his Iron Man suit, Tony replied, "I'm seeing, still working on believing. Where's Banner? Has he showed up yet?"
Luckily for Edith, Clint had given her a ear piece on the jet. - Not that she was going to use it for anything other than eavesdropping.
"Banner?"
"Just keep me posted. JARVIS, find me a soft spot."
Edith watched as Iron Man flew parallel of the beast. Clint and Natasha looked at each other. Naturally, Edith slipped away, and was off to do her job. - Which was fighting the Chitauri, protecting people, and saving the planet, she figured.
Clint caught sight of her as he and the others ran behind upturned taxis. A massive, smooth obsidian scythe, studded with the same midnight jewel that was in her father's ring, materialized in her hand. Clint was surprised once more, though this time, it didn't show. - He had quickly been distracted by Chitauri soldiers landing near them, and proceeded into the fight.Edith's pupils dilated as she found herself surrounded by Chitauri soldiers. The others were too busy to notice, not that she seemed to mind. A wicked grin appeared on her face.
Oh, what fun! The necromancer sang in her head.
Perhaps, she had a hazardous taste for violence. As they started to fire at her, she rose into the air, levitating a few feet above them. Their rifles somehow missed every shot, bouncing off some invisible shield around her. When you grow up the way she did, learning shielding magic was very important.
She laughed, her devious grin widening as she raised her free hand. A black mist rose from Edith's hand, and wrapped around her body. Some of the chitauri soldiers looked curiously around, uncertain as to what was going on. Of course, that ended soon: A vicious rumble was heard. The ground beneath Edith and the Chitauri trembled.
A decayed hand dug through the tar and pavement as a massive hole in the ground opened. Some of the Chitauri fell into the vast pit, while others scrambled away.
Out of the pit, erupted hoards of the undead. These weren't the slow paced zombies you would see on television. - No, these creatures would be practically human, if not for their decaying forms.
Some had their bones exposed, while some's eyes were either missing or dangling out of their hollow skulls; Everything still functioned in these pour souls; But, alas, they lacked a heartbeat. The more rose, the more it was obvious she'd risen beings who'd been soldiers in their past...
"Relax, guys, they just wanna have a soldier-to-soldier convo..." Edith joked. It was hilarious, at least, to her.
She watched as her soldiers attacked the Chitauri closest to them. One of the undead was missing their jaw, yet somehow, their tongue was still there, wriggling. Edith spotted him, and chuckled to herself.
"Wicked," She commented.
The ghoul nodded to her, giving what was assumed to be a "thank you", as he quite obviously couldn't speak. He went on to attack the chitauri viciously.
She waited a moment, examining the battle, before she landed on the pavement gracefully. One of the enemies attempted to attack her, but failed when she threw a punch, landing it on the chitauri's jaw. As it flew to the side, she swung her scythe, and beheaded them. The God of Mischief himself watched as The Avengers fought his army. He was shocked to discover a dark, powerful energy. - However, there was seemingly nothing there when he searched for it. What in Odin's name...? His thought was interrupted by none other than Hawkeye's arrow. He snatched it out the air like a cat, and looked to Hawkeye, grinning. Unfortunately, the arrow exploded...
Edith was efficient, chopping Chitauri warriors up like meat upon her dinner plate. What else would one do with a scythe, after all? Perhaps she was a bit homicidal...but at least she had some sense of morality. - She was severing them; Some by their legs, some by their heads, some by their hips, and so on.
Stark flew above her briefly, but caught her laughing as she chopped four Chitauri in half with the single swing of her scythe. His eyebrows raised in his surprise, and he nearly gagged at the gory scene.
He could hardly believe that she was that well equipped. Sure, he knew she was a necromancer or whatever; But he hadn't expected her to be so...lethal. Maybe it was her beauty that blinded him? Seeing as Natasha's beauty had done the same, he figured, it had to have been that. Note to self: Beautiful women are likely to be the most dangerous. Stark thought, shaking his head briefly.
He turned his focus to the Chitauri Leviathan he was flying beside. He aimed his laser booster at it. It did absolutely nothing, unfortunately.
"Sir, we will lose power before you ever cut through that shell," said JARVIS. Tony flew ahead, facing the oncoming beast.
"JARVIS, you ever heard the tale of Jonah?"
"I wouldn't consider him a role model,"
Stark flew towards the Leviathan, unleashing every arsenal on his Iron Man suit. The Leviathan opened it's mouth, and in he went.
He eventually burst through the other end, causing the creature to collapse. Tony rolled down the street, the wind knocked out of him. An overwhelmed sigh escaped his lips as a small band of chitauri warriors rushed towards him, their rifles at the ready.Thor and Captain America fought off chitauri, side by side. Both threw their weapons; But, as Steve turned, he was struck by an energy blast, and sent to the ground.
Thor marched over to a car and flipped it using the Mjolnir, crushing some chitauri. Steve attempted to stand. Thor assisted him, and Cap raised his shield once again.
"You ready for another bout?" asked the thunder god.
"What? You gettin' sleepy?" replied Steve. Thor merely grinned.Selvig, now having been released from Loki's mind control, was clacking away at his laptop. Natasha grabbed Loki's scepter, and slowly broke into the force field. She was nearly touching the Tesseract.
"I can close it! Can anybody hear me? I can shut the portal down!" announced Natasha over the earpiece.
"Do it!" said Steve.
"No, wait!" Stark protested. "I got a nuke coming in, it's gonna blow in less than a minute. And I know just where to put it." He had caught up to the nuke, and with mighty effort, he managed to wrench the rocket off it's course.
"Stark, you know that's a one-way trip?" Steve said, concerned for his friend. Tony spoke to JARVIS,
"Save the rest for return, J."
"Sir, shall I call Miss Potts?" JARVIS asked.
"You might as well." Tony answered. The phone rang, but, there was no answer. He climbed higher over the city, gaining more speed. He watched in horror as his suit began to freeze. All communications died. He entered the portal with the nuke. He was genuinely horrified as he looked around. - Around him in a pitch black sky were what must have been ninety ships. Some were still, while others moved about. He released the nuke, his eyes closing.Suddenly, all the chitauri soldiers keeled over. Edith watched, confused.
They were dead, she realized. She tapped her ear piece, only just realizing that it'd been off the whole time.
"Come on, Stark..." She heard the Widow mutter.
Edith was blatantly confused as she gazed up at the portal. What had happened while she was fighting amongst her undead?
"Close it." Cap ordered Natasha.
Edith watched as the energy beam vanished from the sky, and the portal closed quickly. She squinted her eyes as she saw a small figure plummeting towards the Earth.
She could practically hear Cap's smile as he spoke, "Son of a gun!"
She was readying herself to catch Stark, but suddenly, all light vanished. Her eyes widened as she looked up; A leviathan was soon to fall upon her. She dashed into a building.
This plan, of course, failed when the building collapsed from the Leviathan hitting it. An idiotic decision, truly.
She was left covered in rubble, unconcious.
