A few years had passed since Thranduil had last seen Elerrian. Time had passed and things had changed but his heart never forgot. One of these changes was Thranduil himself. He had grown and now he was in his late teens.

His hair was far longer and much fairer, he was taller and his complexion had become fuller. His face was full of life and he wandered the palace admiring everything beautiful.

One fateful evening he sat alone on the balcony when he heard his father calling for him. Sighing he rose to his feet and made his way silently to the throne room where his father was speaking to a young maiden. Bowing his head he muttered, “Gi suilon,” before turning on his heels and making his way back to his chambers.

He felt someone grab his arm; preventing him from going any further, “Thranduil?” His heart beat quicker in his chest as he recognised her voice. “Iston i nîf gîn,” he murmured softly smiling at her.

She returned the smile and held his hands in her own, “It has been long,” she whispered softly staring into his eyes. Thranduil’s father cleared his throat and smiled at both of them, “I leave you in capable hands,” he said quietly; silently leaving the room.

“Before you say anything,” she said reaching for something from her bag, “I must return something to you.” In her hands a white lily lay; it’s delicate petals curled itself over her fingers. “How?” he murmured staring at the lily in disbelief.

She laughed softly and stroked the petals with her finger, “When you promised me we would see each and gave me the lily as a token of your honour I took care of it. With each passing day it grew more beautiful and as yesterday’s moon appeared from behind the clouds the flower bloomed even more beautiful than ever.”

Handing the flower to him she smiled and continued, “That day I knew you would keep your promise; and now you have.” Thranduil gracefully accepted the flower and placed it against his heart. He sighed happily as he tucked the flower behind her ear,

“This belongs here; I gave you that flower so that you might not forget me. That you might never forget me.” She placed a hand on his shoulder and whispered, “I could never forget you,” as she leaned in closer and kissed him softly.

Thranduil returned that kiss as he wrapped his arms around her waist, “My heart is forever yours Elerrian,” he murmured stroking her hair.

A FEW YEARS LATER

Thranduil smiled as he stood proudly next to his father and watched Elerrian make her way down towards him in a beautiful olive green satin dress. The most beautiful thing about her was the smile that decorated her face when she reached for Thranduil’s hands.

He hugged her tightly and whispered, “You look as beautiful as the day I met you.” She laughed softly and planted a small kiss on his cheek. Smiling he turned towards his father and bowed his head; Oropher raised his hands in the air and exclaimed,

“The stars have always been the light of our people, they guide us in times of trouble and unite us with each other. Tonight we are gathered here today to celebrate the marriage of Thranduil Prince of Mirkwood and Elerrian Princess of the Southern woods.”

Oropher turned to face his son and handed him a necklace, “this was your mothers; She gave it to me in hopes one day I might be able to find love once more but now I pass it down to you for you have found something I could not, love.”

Thranduil smiled and bowed his head, “Thank you ada.” Oropher turned to face Elerrian and hugged her, “You have his heart and have earned his love. You are now not only the the queen of Mirkwood; you are his queen.” Elerrian pulled her hair back as Thranduil slipped the necklace around her neck. “

Thranduil do you take Elerrian to be your wife?”

He nodded and took her hands into his own and said, “With all my heart.” “

Do you Elerrian take Thranduil to be your husband?”

She smiled softly and murmured, “He has always had my heart and my love.” “By the power vested in me I now pronounce you King and Queen. May the Valar watch over you and protect you.”

Thranduil bent down and kissed her hand softly, “My queen….” Leaning in closer she kissed him and whispered into his ear, “My king…..”

A FEW YEARS LATER

Thranduil sat on his throne and sighed wearily; the room was empty and the silence that echoed around him comforted him greatly. Exhaustion overwhelmed his tired body as he fell into a troubled sleep.

The memory of his father’s death lay freshly imprinted in his mind.

ADA,” he screamed as he watched his father fall to his knees. Running towards him he discarded his weapon and cradled his body in his arms, “Ada no please,” he cried as Oropher reached out for him, “Thranduil…..I have lived a long life now it is your turn,” he whispered reaching for his hand. As the final breath left his body his body went limp as Thranduil’s tears slipped down his cheek. He looked at the broach and then back at his father’s body. A roar silenced his sobs and the cries of victory that rung out on the battlefield.

Thranduil’s eyes flew open as he moaned in fear. His hands shook with fear and his breathing had become heavy. “Elerrian,” he whispered running up to her chambers.

Flinging the door open he looked around wildly and found her sleeping peacefully. He cradled her hand in his own and began crying almost silently. She woke up to find her husband in tears and she immediately sat up and began rubbing his back in order to calm him down.

“My father,” he moaned taking his head in his hands. “Sssshhhh it’s alright it was only a nightmare.” He looked around wildly and exclaimed, “No it wasn’t. What happens if I die? There will be no heir to the throne! The blood of my family ends bitterly in me.”

Elerrian cupped his head in her hands and said firmly, “Look at me. Do not fear tomorrow; for there is nothing to fear. The blood of your family lives within you,” he shook his head in defeat and Elerrian guided his hand towards her stomach, “and it is alive within me.”

Thranduil looked at her wide-eyed before kissing her passionately. “There is renewed hope,” he whispered happily.
