Gandalf’s POV
I sighed wearily as I bowed my head in acknowledgement as Thranduil, accompanied by two elvish guards walked up to me. “My lord,” I muttered as I looked up at him. “Mithrandir,” he began calmly, “What brings you to these parts?”
Leaning on my staff I exhaled impatiently, “I wish to speak to you alone,” I informed him nodding towards the guards.
“You are dismissed,” he said raising his arm.
They were uneasy and one muttered, “My lord I wish not to leave you so unarmed with this……wanderer.” Catching his eye I raised my eyebrow as I placed a hand on his shoulder, “My dear friend. I am not here to bring harm upon your kin; can two people not talk without suspicious accusations?”
Withdrawing from my grip he quickly muttered an apology and excused himself. “You must forgive them. They are soldiers and their loyalty to their king is unquestionable,” Thranduil informed me with an air of pride as he led me into his private quarters.
Turning to face me he said, “What is it do you wish to speak to me about,” offering me a seat.
Shaking my head I stood by the door and muttered, “I do not wish to speak with you, but with your daughter Hyril.” He stood up abruptly, bumping his hand against the candle. Wincing in pain he cradled his hand as he turned his back to me, “You cannot speak with her. You would have her leave her home and return her to me a different person.”
“This is not your choice to make. You cannot keep her locked away here; she is not your puppet….”
“NO BUT SHE IS MY DAUGHTER,” he roared as he turned to face me. His scar became visible as he bent towards me, “She is of elvish blood she will not…..”
Holding up my hand I countered, “She is only half elf and you know this. You do not wish to see things which you don’t understand; this will be your downfall. I’m sorry about your wife…”
“Do not speak of her,” he hissed, eyes blazing with anger, “Do not mistake my patience for kindness.”
“Hold your tongue,” I replied angrily, “I do not wish to waste my time with an ignorant fool who has walked this earth for thousands of years.” Storming out, I made my way towards the garden. “Find him,” a voice echoed through the hall.
Tiredly I sat down and placed my staff up against the seat. A heavy heart weighed my body down and bound me to my seat. ‘My quest has all been in vain than,” I thought to myself as I reached for a parchment hidden amongst the folds of my robe.
Suddenly I felt a hand on my shoulder; grabbing my sword I swung it around and pointed it towards the intruder. “Hyril!” Dropping my sword I helped her to her feet as she quickly muttered an apology.
“Do not apologise,” I insisted, “what are you doing here?” She placed her hands on her hips and said, “I saw you and a guard informed me that you were here to speak with me.”
“Ah so my quest is not all in vain after all,” I muttered casting her a meaningful glance. “I don’t know why you have to come or what you have to say but I know it’s not good,” she laughed teasingly.
I raised my eyebrow and smiled, “You are right in thinking so. But this is your choice to make; I have a quest in mind which will require your…..skills,” I chose carefully nodding towards her wings. She shifted in her seat uncomfortably before sighing loudly, “I will come.”
Standing up I brought her closer and whispered, “You must be sure of this. Your father is against my coming but I believe you will make up your mind.” Nodding her head she held out her arm and replied, “My skills are of your use.”
I smiled as I grabbed her arm and looked into her eyes, “Make your way towards the shire in three days’ time, say nothing to your host; a hobbit of the name Bilbo Baggins until my arrival.” She closed her eyes and exhaled softly, “I will be there.”
Voices suddenly filled the air, “I must take my leave,” I said grabbing my staff and sword, “Remember three days’ time from now, look for my coming,” I called over my shoulder as I walked off into the forest.
“May the Valar watch over you and protect you.”
