Sophia waited in the hospital, praying he'd be okay.

Jeff's parents were there too, waiting. "Jeff, honey, are you okay?" his mother asked. His face was tightly bandaged so his burns could heal, but he couldn't speak. The doctor came in. "The bandages are coming off today," she said, adjusting her glasses.

Slowly,he began untying his bandages as the fell to the floor. "Aw,man, much better," he said, rubbing his neck. His mother was sobbing, his father was trying to comfort his mother, and Liu looked like he had just seen his worst nightmare. Only Sophia seemed content. "Look in the mirror." She lightly punched his shoulder. He looked at the mirror and stepped back. His face was completely white, his hair burnt to a deep black, the same as Sophia's.

"H-honey," his mother stammered,"we can always get your face fixed." Jeff looked at her, grinning. "Mom. How can you change something as awesome as this?!" He began to laugh, and Sophia joined in,both their sanity long forgotten. His mother looked worriedly at the doctor. "He's shocked," she explained."Give him a day or two,he'll be back to normal." His mother forced a smile. "Jeff, honey, time to go,"she said. " 'Kay,Mommy," he giggled. Sophia snorted, and they laughed even harder.

Sophia sat on her porch, yawning, before she heard a door open. Liu was handcuffed and being led to a police car by two officers. Jeff was outside, crying and yelling for Liu to come back. Sophia leapt down silently, unsheathing her claws.

Two minutes later, the officers had mysteriously disappeared, and Liu was back home. His parents didn't even question this strange turn of events;they were just glad their son was back.

Sophia had snuck into her house, collapsing on her small bed next to the bathroom. A shriek awakened her,and she sat bolt upright before a kick to the spine sent her flying. She yowled in pain as a tingling sensation crept up her spine.

Her mother was screaming like Sophia was a deadly insect.

She hesitated, looking back at her mother. She had stopped screeching and looked at Sophia with ugly gray eyes. "You will never be my daughter," she hissed,"not with your disabilities." She stared back with equal force. "You know what?" she said quietly,"I'm glad I'm not your flesh and blood, your daughter. I've got friends;I don't care if you leave me to die. At least I don't live here with you. I can't say a rude comment about you because cows are sacred in India."

And she left in the dark.

She noticed that Jeff's front door was open, and he was sitting on the porch, bathed in the artificial light from his house.

His hood was pulled up,so his face was hidden. There was fresh blood on his hoodie and dripping from a sharp kitchen knife he was staring at in his hands. Sophia silently approached him, uttering a soft meow to indicate that she was here.

He pulled his hood down, and she blinked in surprise. His mouth was cut open in a smile, dripping scarlet blood, and his eyes were bordered in black, presumably because he had burned his eyelids off. She fished around in her pocket and took out a bottle of eye drops, which Jeff took and applied to his eyes. "I killed them," he muttered. Sophia knew exactly what he meant.

Suddenly, she got an idea and took off towards her house.
