Tess sat in the back seat of the black Ford, blankly staring out the window and the passing cars as Ben drove her and Jason for their first day of Senior Year at Parkington High. The past few days went by quickly, a wish that managed to escape her lips every night before she went to bed, the only way she saw herself as being able to avoid him for most of the day. The way she felt around him was something she was extremely alien to, but what made it worse was her uncertainty about other's feelings around him. No one seemed to show any visible discomfort in his presence, and this scared her. Was she misunderstanding him? Is he really as weird as she feels he is, or is it her mind playing tricks on her?
The motion of the car taking a smooth left turn on to the road that lead to the school grounds broke her train of thoughts, but she continued to stare at her red Converse shoes, the nagging sense of those piercing grey eyes staring at her bothering her a lot more than it did in the last few days. On instinct, she looked up to the rear-view mirror, but saw only her reflection staring back at her. She internally sighed, and pushed out all thoughts about the owner of those mysterious grey eyes to the back of her mind, and made a mental note to focus on enjoying the first day as a high school senior. Ben pulled up on the sidewalk, unfastened his seatbelt and turned his torso to get a good look at the two teenagers. "Okay, then. Get out of my car and enjoy your day kids!" He said, beaming from ear to ear, looking almost ten times more excited than Tess was. She swiftly leaned forward and placed a quick peck on his cheek as she hopped out of the car. Jason silently followed her up the cemented steps of the school, slowly pushing their way through a large crowd of people, as students began to make their way towards the front doors.
She ignored the squeaks of Jason's shoes against the clean floor as he followed her though the lobby. She took a quick right turn towards her old locker, and from a distance, noticed some familiar faces at the end of hallway. A smile creeped to her lips but it suddenly vanished as she felt him stand behind her, close enough for her to hear his breathing. She slowly turned around, her gaze fixed to the floor, as she said, "I, umm." She hesitated, trying to frame a coherent sentence without having to sound rude and continued when she finally did, "My friends are waiting for me. I'll see you later." She quickly turned and was about to walk away when his husky voice called her, "Tess?" The way her name sounded from his mouth made her skin crawl, strengthening the urge for her to tug at the skin on any part of the body that she found accessible. She chanted to herself - No, not now. She turned back to face him, steeling herself to look up at him, "Yes?" He held out a piece of paper to her and asked, "Could you help me find my locker?" She looked at the number printed on the paper and pointed out to the locker, about five lockers away from hers.
She walked away from him without another word and head over to her group of friends. She slid her arm around Brie's curvy waist, accentuated by her orange crop top and low waist jeans and gave her a half hug as the rest of the group cheered on seeing her. Kevin, his brown hair falling so far down his face it made her wonder how he managed to walk around without bumping into things and people, high-fived her, while Chris came over to Brie's side and mockingly shoved Tess' arm away from his girlfriend, feigning overprotectiveness. He winked at her and Brie stuck her tongue out at him, receiving a soft peck on her forehead in return. His dark and soft hair seemed to shine under the tube lights as he chuckled, her blue eyes meeting up to his deep brown ones making Tess feel warm and happy for her friends.
Mavis' slender arm wrapped around hers and she turned to she her raven haired and ruby lipped friend chewing gum with a smile plastered on her face. They embraced each other and began to chatter like a group of monkeys about their individual trips. She suddenly felt a pair of strong arms pull her from around the waist into a firm torso, her heart running at a million miles an hour. She turned herself to meet her gaze with those beautiful sea-green ones and buried herself into the firm chest of her male best friend and the only person she had eyes for. She breathed in his scent, the proximity of the two making her cheeks warm as Michael's large hands wrapped themselves around her tiny frame, unaware of her true feelings for him.
The warmth suddenly vanished and she began to pull herself out of the contact, the feeling of those grey eyes staring at them nagging her. She slowly slid away and peeked from Mike's side, almost hidden by his large frame. The safety she felt with Mike's large still holding her waist softly failed to prevent her blood going cold as his eyes met hers briefly, anger raging in them, before he slammed his locker door and walked in the opposite direction.
