I was hoisted up onto my teamates' shoulders as I held the cup high above my head the crowd cheering me on. I could see my friend waving from the stands. My boyfriend smiling and cheering the loudest. But for some reason that pained me the most. Then as if to end that pain, the ground opened up beneath me and instead of laughing I was falling... falling...
I jolted awake, sitting bolt upright and found myself in a strange room in a sleeping bag. And somebody was in the bed. I scrambled backwards, my hand over my mouth to hide a scream. I carefully took in my surroundings and realised that I was in my friends' room. My family were gone while I sat here going to uni everyday.
I got up and got ready, careful not to disturb my friend before creeping downstairs to find a young boy, no younger than me, asleep on the couch. I bit my lip so hard I bled, to stop me yelping. Just then my friend came downstairs. "Hi C. I see you've met my older brother. Don't worry about him on the couch. He just came home late again."
"Oh. OK. Did you hear the news?"
"What news?"
"New kid coming today."
"Yes. Do you know how many texts I have received about that from everyone else?"
"Same."
We finished packing our things and walked to school. On the my friend Sophia playfully nudged me and gave me a sly grin.
"What?" I asked, oblivious to the reason of her expression.
"Oh. Don't say it. I know now. Look I'm still getting over my last boyfriend. I don't need another crush. OK? Don't even think about it."
"Fine, but if you do, don't ask to be forgiven. No excuses."
"It's not like I can control who I like and who I don't."
We walked the rest of the way raving about amazing bands. When we got to uni I had to go to English to help with my story writing. Sophia headed to science. We had heard that the boy would be in our group after lunch.
When it was lunch all anybody was talking about was how mysterious this person was. Nobody even knew his name. And very few had gotten a good look at his face.
As soon as I walked into the class I immediately picked him out from the crowd. He could be no older than at 18. For some reason he reminded me of my ex. A jolt of pain shot through my brain as an image of his smiling face and laughing shouts filled my head, the branded pain as fresh as ever.
The boy turned, his eyes locking on mine. My heart caught in my throat. Oh God.
He had the same eyes. The same dark brown eyes. And his smile...His face burned into my mind and stayed fresh for rest of the lesson, even after I had torn my eyes away.
I met up with Sophia at the end of the day.
"So Crystal, did you get a glimpse of the newbie?"
"He had his eyes. The same eyes. Bright and beautiful." I kept saying as if in a trance.
"Hello. Earth to Crystal. CRYSTAL JEWEL YOU PAY ATTENTION RIGHT NOW AND STOP SCARING ME!!!" Sophia finally burst, snapping me out of my trance as the real came crashing down on me like a tidal wave.
"W-wh-what's going on? S? " I stammered as I began to remember what happened. Please let me be dreaming a nightmare.
"The new kid. Did... you... see... him...?" Sophia said slowly as if I had learning issues.
"Yes. I-I-I saw him. Why?"
"What did he look like?"
"I don't know. All I know is that he has the same eyes as my ex."
"Really. Maybe he is your ex. In disguise. Wow. I could make a teen romance novel with this material."
"Please just stick to becoming a vet. Please."
"Meh. Suit yourself."
I mouthed a thank you as we arrived home.I crawled into my sleeping bag. Full after a nice meal.
The same eyes. His eyes.
I drifted into a nightmare of a dream. His eyes burned into my mind.
The very same eyes.
